SALT LAKE CITY – Tanaeya Boclair and
Malia Nawahine each scored a career-high in a 73-61 loss to Oregon Friday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Nawahine scored 23 points including 5-of-7 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the foul line as the junior wing led both teams in scoring. Boclair knocked down a career-high 19 points including 6-of-8 from the foul line after an explosive first half of 15 points.
"They were awesome," head coach
Lynne Roberts said about the duo. I thought (
Tanaeya Boclair) was fantastic in the first half—I thought she did a really good job of being patient and taking what the defense gave her, whether it's an outside shot, or reading the (defense), or opening gaps, attacking hard, getting to the free-throw line.
"The stats may not show it, but she's been really consistent all season long, and kind of in her leadership and consistent in her effort and in her talking, her buy-in has been good all season long. So it's nice to see it be rewarded with her output."
Junior forward
Emily Potter also finished in double figures with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. She grabbed five rebounds, three blocks and two assist on the night.
Utah (15-11, 4-11) won the tipoff, but Oregon (18-9, 8-7) ran out to a quick 6-0 lead over the Utes. Boclair and Nawahine connected for the Utes, but the Ducks went on another 6-0 run for a 12-4 lead before the first media timeout.
Boclair scored out of the time out on an assist from Potter then Potter scored back-to-back baskets on the next two possessions to trail by two, 12-10. Nawahine drilled a 3-pointer for a one-point game, but Oregon went on a 7-0 run to end the first quarter for a 21-13 lead.
Junior wing
Wendy Anae started the second quarter for the Utes scoring the first two points to open the quarter. The Ducks took advantage of an and-one opportunity to pull out to a 10-point lead, 25-15, early in the second quarter. Nawahine found herself at the foul line going 2-2 for the Utes first free-throws of the game.
Oregon continued to dominate the offensive end of the floor pulling ahead by 15 points, but Utah made a push scoring three field goals while knocking down 8-of-9 free-throws to make it a 7-point game at the half, 37-30. Boclair scored six of those eight foul shots to lead both teams with 15 points heading into the locker room as the Utes outscored the Ducks 17-16 in the second quarter.
"I felt like we were pushing on the door to start that third quarter, but Oregon went on a couple runs. They're a good team with really great passing guards and bigs who can score on the block or 15-feet out," Roberts said.
Utah opened the second half with a 3-pointer from Nawahine and a two from Boclair to climb within two before Oregon picked up a field goal, 39-35. Utah went on a 3-minute scoring drought, allowing the Ducks to pull out to a nine-point lead, 46-37.
Nawahine drilled her third 3-pointer of the game to close the gap, 46-40, but Utah continued to struggle from the floor going 1-for-5 allowing Oregon to pull out to another 13-point lead. Nawahine was on fire from behind the arc knocking down another three for a 10-point game.
Potter scored under the basket to make it a single-digit ball game before the end of the third quarter as the Ducks led 55-47.
Oregon opened the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run to jump out to a 66-49 lead before the Utes scored on back-to-back possessions – Potter scored a layup and freshman wing
Megan Jacobs connected on two foul shot attempts, 66-53.
Unfortunately, Utah's push didn't disrupt the Ducks, as Oregon shot 78 percent on 7-9 from the floor in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter. Nawahine and Jacobs made a late run for the Utes, but the game had already gotten away as the Ducks claimed a 73-61 victory.
