PULLMAN, Wash. – Utah took an early lead and never looked back claiming a 74-57 Pac-12 victory over Washington State Thursday night inside the Beaseley Coliseum.
"Defensively we've been good all year and tonight we were able to score a little bit," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "I felt like we shot the ball better. We turned it over a little too much, but I'm not going to be picky right now. I think the biggest thing is the rebounding – we crushed them on the boards. I'm proud of the team and our defense was really good."
Utah (16-12, 5-12) was paced by senior wing
Paige Crozon with 19 points with three 3-pointers and a perfect 4-4 from the foul line while pulling down five defensive rebounds.
Junior wing
Malia Nawahine tallied 15 points including three 3-pointers. Junior forward
Emily Potter picked up her ninth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds and 11 points with four blocks.
Sophomore point guard
Erika Bean scored nine points with seven assists, seven rebounds and two blocks against the Cougars. Junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair was aggressive on both sides of the floor with six rebounds, five points, three assists and two blocks.
"I told the team before the game and at halftime the goal for our starters is to start the first quarter and third quarter strong, and they did that which really got us going in both halves," Roberts stated.
The Utes showed tenacious defense holding the Cougars (10-18, 5-12) to 27 percent from field-goal range while Utah shot 43 percent on the night while also out-rebounding WSU 52-36.
Utah won the tip and fed the ball inside to Potter for two points. The Utes forced a turnover at the other end and Bean pulled up for a jump shot from the elbow for a quick 4-0 lead over the Cougars. Boclair made the extra pass to Crozon for the first 3-pointer of the game. Crozon would score again, this time on an assist from Bean to lead 9-0 before the first media timeout.
After three and a half scoreless minutes, the Cougars took advantage of an and-one opportunity to cut into the Utes' lead, 9-3. Utah responded with three of its own as Crozon found Boclair for a base-line three. WSU used a 3-pointer and a pair of free-throws to make it a 12-8 ball game with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter. The Cougars scored two more on an in-bound play under their own basket before Bean connected on a hook shot just inside the lane. Junior wing
Tilar Clark scored the Utes' third three of the quarter to take a 17-10 lead before the end of the first period.
Utah took a 10-point lead over the Cougars in the opening minute of the second quarter on another 3-pointer from Crozon. Freshman wing
Megan Jacobs threw a beautiful pass inside to Nawahine who scored a reverse layup, 22-12. Washington State went on a 6-3 run before Jacobs drove the lane for a layup as the shot clock expired to spur a 6-0 run before WSU made a push. Potter hit a jump shot just inside the arc at the buzzer for a 33-21 lead at the half.
Crozon scored with her left hand under the basket on an in-bound pass from Bean to open the second half. The lone senior knocked down her third 3-pointer of the game for a 38-21 lead over WSU. The Cougars were 1-of-6 from the floor midway through the third quarter as Utah continued to lead, 44-27.
Utah fell into a rut in the third quarter with nearly six minutes without a field goal, until Potter and Clark scored back-to-back to break the spell. Free-throws kept Utah in the lead with seven made shots from the line for a 54-38 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the first half of the fourth quarter, but WSU had outscored the Utes 13-7. The Cougars hit two free-throws to make it a single-digit lead for Utah, 61-53, midway through the quarter. Bean hit her own two foul shots and a fast-break layup to take a 12-point lead. Utah continued to pull away as Nawahine hit a 3-pointer and a layup for a 17-point lead, 70-53.
Both teams would find the basket a few more times before the whistle as the Utes claimed a 74-57 road win against the Cougars.
The Utes continue their road trip taking on No. 9 Washington Saturday at 3 p.m. which will be aired on the Pac-12 Network and on ESPN700 with Tyson Ewing.
