SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah women's basketball suffered an 82-53 loss to No. 10 Washington Friday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The Utes were led by freshman wing
Megan Jacobs who scored a career-high 14 points while pulling down eight rebounds.
Freshman wing
Megan Jacobs was the Utes' (14-8, 3-8) leading scorer for the first time in her career while also scoring a career-high 14 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Junior wing
Wendy Anae added scored a career-high 13 points and six rebounds.
"I saw this game as an opportunity to try to spark something for us," said Jacobs. "I think I'm starting to gain my team's trust and my coaches' trust. I just take it day by day to get better."
"Wendy (Anae) and
Megan Jacobs were awesome," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "What I wanted from this game was for our players to be fearless and aggressive and have nothing to lose and I think these two played this way. I am really proud of them."
Junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Washington's Kelsey Plum, the NCAA's leading scorer, tallied 24 points for the Huskies (21-3, 9-2), while the nation's top rebounder Chantel Osahor grabbed 20 boards to go with 19 points.
Washington shot 46 percent from the floor while Utah suffered through a 30-percent shooting night. The Huskies outscored the Ute's 46-26 in the paint as the size played a factor.
"They do have legitimate post play and legitimately best player in the country in their point guard, but I didn't think that was our issue," Roberts stated. "Our issue was offensively we can't score. If you are going to play the No. 10 team in the nation and expect to get a win, we have to shoot better than 30 percent."
Entering Friday night's match up, Washington led the Pac-12 on free-throw percentage shooting 78 percent from the line, but struggled on 14-25 for 56 percent from the foul line.
After both teams combined for 0-4 from the floor to open the game, Washington connected on a 3-pointer and pulled out to a 7-0 lead. Junior forward
Emily Potter scored on an assist from junior wing
Malia Nawahine, but the Huskies led 13-4 on 55 percent shooting at the first media time out.
Anae provided a fresh energy for the Utes off the bench, but Washington could not miss. Senior wing
Paige Crozon scored Utah's first 3-pointer of the game and Anae scored again to cut the Huskies' lead to four, 19-15. Washington led 24-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Nawahine drove under the basket for a layup and the first points of the second quarter. Sophomore guard
Erika Bean then stole the UW inbounds' pass and dished it to Potter for a bucker, to trim Washington's lead to 24-19.
But the Utes went cold from the field while the Huskies heated up-going on a 12-0 run on 21-percent field goal shooting before Boclair broke Utah's scoring drought.
Utah went four minutes in the second quarter without a field goal before Anae scored her fourth basket of the game and Utah headed to the locker room down 45-25 at the half.
Potter scored the first points of the second half, but Washington scored the next six points to extend its lead to 51-27. Anae scored the Ute's second 3-pointer of the game from the top of the key, but Washington's Plum answered at the other end for a 60-32 lead.
Utah scored back-to-back baskets for the first time since the opening of the second quarter as Jacobs scored a 3-pointer and Anae grabbed two points spurring a 9-2 run as the Utes trailed 64-41 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was a battle of free-throws as the two teams combined for 24 free-throw attempts in the final 10 minutes of action. Both teams pulled down five offensive rebounds and eight defensive rebounds, but Washington had already pulled ahead to secure the win.
The Utes continues their homestand hosting Washington State Sunday at noon MT for more Pac-12 action. The game will be streamed and live stats will be provided on utahutes.com. Tyson Ewing will be on the air on ESPN700 for in-game action.
