Utah Postgame Transcript
SEATTLE, Wash. – Utah fell to No. 5 seed Arizona State in Round One of the 2017 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament Thursday afternoon at KeyArena, 72-54.
Junior wing
Malia Nawahine scored 10 points for the Utes including 2-of-3 from the 3-point arc. Junior forward
Emily Potter also scored 10 points while pulling down a team-high six rebounds and grabbed four steals
The Utah (16-14, 5-13) women shot .317 and finished with nine assists on 19 field goals.
Arizona State (19-11, 9-9) was paced by three starters finishing in double figures as the team shot 42 percent from the floor.
Utah was first on the board to open the game, but Arizona pulled away with momentum in the first quarter on 50-percent shooting.
Utah won the tip, but it was knocked out of bounds by the Sun Devils. The Utes were not disrupted as
Emily Potter scored off the in-bound play to go up 2-0. ASU responded with an 12-0 run connecting on two pairs of free-throws and going 4-for-4 on its next field goal attempts.
During ASU's run, Utah struggled from the flooring missing 11 field-goal attempts before junior wing
Wendy Anae found an open layup under the basket as the Utes trailed 12-4. Sophomore point guard
Erika Bean picked up an and-one opportunity on an assist from Potter, 15-7. Bean picked up two more points scoring on a layup, but ASU pulled out to an 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
ASU opened the second quarter carrying its momentum over from the first 10 minutes of action with two points. Junior wing
Tilar Clark answered with the Utes' first 3-pointer of the game to trail 20-12. The Sun Devils made it an 11-point ball game as Utah went on a 3-minute scoring drought before Nawahine drove the baseline for a layup.
The Utes continued to make a push going 4-for-4 including a 3-pointer from Nawahine to climb within seven points, 29-22. It was a free-throw battle in the final minutes of action as ASU held the edge over Utah 33-27 at the half despite the Utes' outscoring the Sun Devils 18-15.
ASU opened the second half with a 9-2 run as Bean scored a layup on a fast break in the first two minutes of the quarter. Both teams hit a stretch of 1-for-9 shooting from the floor until Anae connected on a free-throw-line extended jump shot as the Utes trailed 49-36.
Anae scored another field-goal and a free-throw to make it a 10-point game with less than a minute to play in the third quarter. ASU made it to the foul line for a 51-39 lead at the end of the period.
Utah could not catch a break in the fourth quarter opening the final 10 minutes of action with four scoreless minutes until Crozon scored a layup for her first points of the game. ASU took advantage of the Utes' offensive struggle with another 12-0 run on 60-percent shooting from the floor.
Nawahine knocked down her second 3-pointer of the game to become the first Ute in double figures with 10 points to trail 63-46 midway through the fourth quarter. Potter joined Nawahine with 10 points on a layup under the basket, 65-48.
Freshman guard
Kiana Moore came off the bench scoring three quick points in effort to make an offensive push for the Utes. Moore scored a layup and Clark took a charge with the Utes trailing by 18 and less than two minutes to play in the game, but the Utes we unable to recover. Arizona State advanced to take on No. 4 seed UCLA.
