SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – This weekend will begin PAC-12 conference play for the Utes, matching up against the 9
th ranked team in the country, California (13-5) on Friday. Then on Saturday they will take on the 22
nd ranked team in the country, Stanford (10-4).
The Utah men's tennis team heads into PAC-12 play with an overall record of 14-4, compared to last season's record of 16-3 before entering conference play. Last season, the Utes also opened up conference play against Cal and Stanford, losing both matches with final scores of 3-4 against Cal, and 2-4 against Stanford. In singles action against Cal,
David Micevski was able to card a win at the No. 2 position over Filip Bergevi 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Micevski also was victorious in singles play against Stanford, with a 6-3, 6-3 win over David Wilczynski at the No. 2 position.
The match against Cal is set to begin at 6 p.m. MST, with play being held in Berkeley, California, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Then on Saturday, the Utes are set to take on Stanford in Stanford, California, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium with play beginning at 1 p.m. MST.
Utah Notes
The Utes are coming off of a 5-2 victory against the University of the Pacific. Against the Tigers,
Egbert Weverink and
David Micevski were the only doubles team to card a win, defeating Ross Watson and Alex Giannini with a final score of 6-3, at the No. 2 spot. Then in singles action,
Joe Woolley cruised past Lance Ngo at the No. 5 position, with a final score of 6-2, 6-1.
Slava Shainyan then defeated Ross Watson at the No. 4 spot, with a final score of 7-6 (5-0), 6-1. At the No. 6 position,
Egbert Weverink edged out Bryan Huslin, with a final score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
David Micevski defeated Alex Giannini at the No. 1 position with a final score of 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-1, with
Parker McGuiness rounding things off for the Utes defeating Akram El Sallaly with a final score of 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Opponent Notes
For Cal, Florian Lakat, a previous Pac-12 Player of the Week (Feb. 20), has a 16-11 singles record and is 9-8 at court-one singles. Andre Goransson has an 21-10 singles record and an 8-6 court-two singles record; he beat Filip Bergevi for the singles title at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships last fall in Berkeley. Bergevi is 16-9 in singles, including 3-4 on court three; he's also 2-2 on court four, on which the senior clinched the win over Illinois with a 7-5, 7-6(6) win over Julian Childers. In singles, Billy Griffith has a 21-5 record, including an 11-3 dual-match record; that breaks down into 6-2 on court three and 5-1 on court four. Freshman Bjorn Hoffman (20-11 in singles) has played the most on court five (4-5); he's also 3-3 on court four. Also on court five, J.T. Nishimura (8-4 overall) is 4-3; the junior is also 3-1 on court six. Doubles All-Americans last season, Lakat and Bergevi have posted a 19-4 doubles record, including an 11-2 record on court one, this season; last fall, the two Bears won the doubles crown at the Saint Francis Health System All-American Championships. Goransson and Griffith have a 18-5 doubles record, including a 9-1 court-two record. Hoffmann and Nishimura have an 8-8 doubles record, including 7-7 on court three.
The Stanford men's tennis team is coming off of a 4-0 win over San Diego state earlier this week. The Cardinal cruised in doubles as Michael Genender and Sameer Kumar trounced Santiago Cevallos and Nicholas Mitchell 6-3 in the No. 2 position before Brandon Sutter and David Wilczynski matched the score at the three spot to take a 1-0 lead. The Aztecs were never able to get a lead on the Cardinal with Brandon Sutter sweeping Santiago Cevallos 6-3, 6-4 in the five spot before David Wilczynski made it XX in a row as he dominated Joel Popov 6-1, 6-1 to make it 3-0. Rookie William Genesen continued his banner week by adding his second clinching point in as many matches with a straight set win over Raul de la Torre in the six spot 6-3, 6-2.
