OJAI, Calif. – The University of Utah men's tennis team cruised past Washington in the opening round of the Pac-12 Championships this evening, 4-1.
"We did not play our best but fought extremely hard to get this win today," head coach
Roeland Brateanu said. "This result provides us with a great opportunity tomorrow against USC. We know what's on the line and I'm very happy with the effort put forth by the team today."
The Utes set the tone with easy doubles wins from
Parker McGuiness and
Dan Little, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot and
Joe Woolley and
Santiago Sierra, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot.
Little put the Utes ahead 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position. However, the Huskies got on the board when Slava Shaniyan was knocked off, 6-0, 7-5 at the No. 3 spot.
Sierra dropped his first set, 6-7, but rallied to quell any momentum Washington thought it had gained. He took the final two sets, 6-2, 6-0 to increase Utah's lead.
Woolley finished things up with a evenly contested 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 result at the No. 6 position. The ending was a cathartic one for the Utes, who had been knocked out of the Pac-12 Championships the last two seasons by UW.
The Utes move on to tomorrow's quarterfinals at 3 p.m. vs. No. 3 USC
