Camp Kyle '17: Day 3

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah football program completed its third practice of fall camp today at the Spence and Cleone Eccles Football Center. With temperatures in the high 90s, the Utes have been able to test their conditioning early.Â

Day Three Overview…
• While still in the NCAA acclimatization period, the Utes wore shoulder pads and helmets only.
• No tackling was allowed with a simple touch being good enough for a down.
• The Utes were wearing red helmets with the offense in red jerseys and the defense in black … the quarterbacks donned white jerseys.

Media Observation Highlights…
• Senior wide receiver Kyle Fulks had a diving catch for a 20-plus yard gain off a pass from Troy Williams.
• Quarterback Tyler Huntley showed his ability to move under pressure, scrambling out of the pocket to complete a pass … also broke out of the pocket for a 15-yard gain down the sideline.
• Cooper Bateman connected with Jameson Field over the middle and under pressure for a 10-yard gain.
• Defensive end Kylie Fitts consistently put pressure on the quarterback during drills.
• Tre' Strong showed his speed on deep coverage during drills.

"This group has an outstanding attitude. The seniors have really taken ownership of the program. The energy and effort levels have been exactly where we want them to

On what he is seeing offensively…
"We are three days in and I think we are in a good spot. We have made a lot of progress in the last three days and it is very apparent that the players did a lot of work this summer which allowed us to hit the ground running."

On how the team is transitioning into Troy Taylor's offense…
"It is Troy's offense. He has complete autonomy and he is the one installing it. It is his baby. The players have really bought in to the scheme. He is a very high energy coach, very positive and very confident and the players are really excited about the chance to go out and see what this offense can do." Â

On how he thinks camp is going so far…
"Third day of camp was good. We have made progress each day. I am very happy with the effort, intensity and focus. We are getting better."

Defensive Coordinator Morgan Scalley
On how being in shoulder pads only affects the practices…
"Today we were in shoulder pads, but any rep that these guys can get regardless of the gear, it is invaluable. Every time we see something new, we watch it on film and try to learn from it so that hopefully next time you see it, it gets picked up correctly. You can get a lot out of these practices."

Wide Receivers coach Guy Holliday…
On how the wide receivers look through three days of camp…
"They are picking it up pretty good. Obviously, it is a work in progress and every day is a new day. I am all about being consistent and we have had some good plays, but also bad plays. We are building and I think we are much further ahead than we were at any time during camp last season. I think we are doing pretty good."

On what he is expecting from the defense this year…
"I expect big things. We are all coming together as a unit and we are all learning. As far as knowledge of the game, we are learning to be in sync and we are clicking well. The chemistry is great. We are all brothers out there which makes it fun."

On having Kylie Fitts back full strength…
"It's amazing. I am so happy for him that he got another year back. Kylie is amazing. He is a leader and a great athlete, everyone knows that. Adding him to our defensive line again is going to make us that much deeper."

"I want to be the best I can be. In the past years, I have kind of just played a role in all of that, but now it is time for me to step up and be a leader."Â
