SALT LAKE CITY – Utah football went with shoulder pads and helmets for day 12 of fall camp with just one more practice tomorrow before its first scrimmage on Saturday.

With eight practices left before school starts, the Utes have made improvements across the board. Utah classes are in session on Monday, Aug. 21 with the Utes' season opener on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 5:30 p.m. against North Dakota at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Media Observation Highlights…
• Quarterback Cooper Bateman showed improvement with his ability to scramble out of the pocket for yards.
• Devonta'e Henry-Cole showed how low he can get to the ground on a quick 10-yard gain … had help from entire offensive line with continued blocking down field.
• The offensive line looked like a more cohesive unit today.
• Kenric Young continued to show his athleticism with strong coverage on deep balls, picking off a pass for an interception.
• After quarterback reps at the line of scrimmage, the team broke into special teams drills.
• There was a heavy emphasis on blocking for kick returns and kick offs.

Post-Practice thoughts with offensive coordinator Troy Taylor…
On how practice has gone the last two days…
"It has gone well. We got a lot of contact in yesterday with a really aggressive, physical practice. Today it was a little bit lighter. They did a good job in both practices."

On his thoughts on Samson Nacua…
"You know, he is a football player. The guy has incredible ball skills, he has a really good feel for space and is incredible in traffic. He is a fierce competitor and is more difficult to tackle than you think. He is a great football player."

On if the wide receivers getting reps while others are out with injuries could move into a more significant playing role…
"Absolutely. As a coach, you always stay open to that because guys will surprise you. You always have your internal judgement on saying this guy can play and this guy can't, but every day is a new day and if someone gets an opportunity, next thing you know they are in the mix."

On how the tight ends look right now…
"They look good. We are limited in numbers with that position, so they are getting a lot of reps. There is a lot to learn in this offense for the tight ends, but they are doing a good job."

On if he is seeing any separation in the offensive position groups…
"I think in the wide receiver position there are guys emerging and making plays, like Samson Nacua. Quarterback wise, I'm not dodging it, but it goes back and forth. They are all really close. In some ways I wish there was more separation to make it easier, but in other ways, there are three guys that I think we could win with."

On if there is pressure on the offense from Utah having a historically strong defense…
"I don't see any problems with it, instead I see opportunities. When you watch a team that has a great defense, you get a lot of opportunities. You get a lot of three-and-outs and can take shots and be aggressive. If you are with a team that has trouble getting off the field defensively, it creates a lot of pressure because it is like diffusing a bomb because you feel like you have to score every time. That can create a lot of tension as a play caller, but when you have a great defense, it's all good."Â Â
