SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah football program took to the field at Rice-Eccles Stadium today for the first scrimmage of fall camp.

Although there was still no live tackling, it didn't stop the offense and defense from getting back into the mood of competition. Both sides of the field were electric with energy throughout the scrimmage, proving that team chemistry is right where it needs to be.

Thanks to the high intensity of the scrimmage, the Utes got a sweet treat afterward.Â

Scrimmage Highlights…
• Tyler Huntley rolled out for a 20-yard completion to Darren Carrington II.
• Tyler Huntley found Demari Simpkins in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown.
• Cooper Bateman continued to show his improved mobility out of the pocket, finding Alec Dana open for a 20-plus yard gain.
• Cooper Bateman threw a fade to the corner for a 12-yard touchdown.
• Mitch Wishnowsky was outstanding with multiple punts over 50 yards.
• Troy Williams scrambled to the outside to throw a 15-yard touchdown to a wide-open Alec Dana.
• Kylie Fitts recorded a fumble recovery on a failed handoff between the quarterback and running back.
• Jordan Howard and Zack Moss both looked good on short down situations near the goal line.

Post-scrimmage thoughts with head coach Kyle Whittingham…

On what he felt the team got out of the scrimmage today…
"We got exactly what we needed to get out of it. The execution level of the offense is continuing to go up. They are starting to settle into the scheme and feel comfortable with what we are doing. The defense was more of the same, great hustle, great intensity. Special teams were sharp. It was exactly what we wanted to see today. A couple of minor negative, well one major negative was that we fumbled the ball in the red zone, but otherwise, we kept everyone healthy and got the work done. I think for being 19 days out, we are right where we need to be." Â

On if any names stood out during today's scrimmage…
"Raelon Singleton made some nices plays, Darren Carrington II made some nice plays. Zack Moss ran the ball hard. Our entire defense was solid. Mitch Wishnowsky punted the heck out of the ball today. We had a lot of guys doing some good things today."

On if Zack Moss has the look of an elite tailback…
"He sure does. He is 215 pounds, he is as strong as a bull and he has speed. It's his time."

On what he saw out of his quarterbacks today…
"More of the same, good stuff. The race is still close. We've obviously got to grade the film for a completely accurate evaluation, but they performed well. Cooper Bateman came in today and did some good things, but there is still very little separation."

On if this is the most talented quarterback group he has had in recent years…
"I would have to say yes. We have three guys that we think we can win with and we haven't always had that in the past."

On how much Tyler Huntley's escape ability could give him an edge in the QB competition…
"That is a big part of it because it is a big component in this day in age with spread offenses and quarterbacks extending the play, as well as the quarterback run game. It is a very predominant part of what we are going to do and that is where he gets a big advantage."

On if Zack Moss is the new running back right now…
"He is. Armand Shyne is going to be out for quite a while. His injury is not season ending, but he will be out a long time."
