Utah Enters Final Week of Preseason Camp

Final Week of Preseason Camp
The Utah football team will conclude its five-week, 20-practice preseason camp with a closed scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 19. Practices this week will be held in the morning. The regular season practice schedule will begin on Monday, Aug. 21 with the start of fall semester classes.

With the season opener against North Dakota on Aug. 31 less than three weeks away, the quarterback competition between senior Troy Williams and sophomore Tyler Huntley remains in a dead heat with senior Cooper Bateman also in the mix … Josh Nurse, Alani Havili-Katoa and Jake Jackson are confirmed at new positions after experimenting at them last week. Nurse, who initially walked on to the team as a receiver, is now on scholarship at safety. Havili-Katoa, a defensive tackle since joining the team in 2014, has moved to the offensive line. Jackson has moved from linebacker to tight end … With a long-term, although not season-ending injury to Armand Shyne, Zack Moss takes over as the No. 1 running back. Moving up on the RB depth chart are Devonta'e Henry-Cole and Jordan Howard. In addition, Troy McCormick is now splitting time between running back and wide receiver. McCormick moved to receiver in the spring after three seasons at running back … Sophomore center Paul Toala was awarded a scholarship at a team meeting last week. Toala, a Dixie State transfer, redshirted last season after serving an LDS church mission in Mexico.

The 17th-annual Ute Fan Fest is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The interactive event features members from all 19 Utah intercollegiate teams. Parking and admission are free … The game themes and promotions have been announced for the 2017 home football season and some highlights include a Blackout vs. UCLA, Ute Proud vs. San Jose State and Homecoming vs. Stanford.
