Venice you have my heart! I loved the water and everything about it. The views were already spectacular as we took a boat to our hotel!! That's right, we stayed on an ISLAND.
We boarded the bus from Florence (Thursday, Aug. 10) and we were in for another long haul. It was pouring rain shortly after we departed and there was a lightning storm, though most of us slept through the whole thing. There was also a traffic jam that really delayed our travel, but we made it to Venice in the late afternoon and luckily the rain had subsided for our boat ride.
First of all, our baggage was all loaded onto a separate boat for us and dropped off at our rooms once we arrived, which I thought was super cool. And then we took a separate boat ourselves to our island! The entire island was a resort and spa, and I was definitely feeling the life of luxury.Â
We showered and got ready to hit Venice for a couple of hours. St. Mark's Square was amazing and had the prettiest church (St. Marks Basilica) on its right hand side. We spent an hour walking around until we finally settled on a place to eat and finished off dinner with gelato of course! We then headed back to the water to catch a boat back.
The last boat leaves Venice to come back to the hotel at 12:30 am and it is about a 15 minute ride to get there, so if we were running late for curfew, we would really be stuck in Venice. We made jokes that we would have to swim back, but we never cut it that close to curfew. We arrived back plenty early, but we did feel kind of trapped on the island when we got hungry later in the night and there was no where to go! I was eating any and every snack I had in my bag and some girls were big balling and ordered room service (cough, cough
Jordan Cruz,
Kiana Moore,
Daneesha Provo). We all survived and went to sleep excited to see some amazing breakfast in the morning.
We had THE ENTIRE DAY FRIDAY to do whatever sightseeing we wanted. Some of the team woke up at 6Â a.m. to watch the sunrise and eat breakfast early, while the rest of us got to sleep in and eat later. Everyone hit the pool up in the afternoon for some more pictures and sun. The view from the rooftop was stunning. The pictures we took look like they could be in a magazine. There were views of the water and Venice from the edge of our infinity pool. I could have stayed there for a week, just lying up there soaking up the rays and having people bring food to me.Â
After our time in the sun we relaxed for a bit, grabbed a sandwich at the deli and then got ready to head into Venice for the evening. We arrived again to Venice in the daylight and found it to be super busy with tourists. It usually calms down in the evening or very early morning, making those times really nice to walk around without much traffic.Â
But the real reason we came in to Venice that day was to do a gondola tour! Shout out to the coaches and our guide Sara for organizing that! There are no roads in Venice for cars to drive on, so all transportation is by boat or by foot, so we really got to experience how locals get around.
I felt like I was in a movie on that gondola. There were six people to a boat and we went all through the little streets and finally onto the main canal and back. It was a lot more tippy than I thought it would be, but the drivers are so skilled at moving the long gondola around the tight turns with one giant oar.
After our tour we needed to find dinner and it just so happens that Hard Rock Cafe was right next to where we started the gondola rides. I had been craving a cheeseburger for days, and though I love Italy, it was fantastic to just eat a burger and fries! We all ate as one team for dinner which was also very nice to all be together.
Following dinner my stomach was so happy, and some people caught the next boat back, but a few stayed to do some shopping. Venice is known for their hand-blown glass, so we picked up a few things like rings, bracelets and figurines before hopping on the boat back to the island.
On Saturday it was game day again! We spent the morning eating and relaxing by the pool or in our rooms before we had to boat and bus to Trieste for our second game. It was quite a long drive, but the town of Trieste was gorgeous and was right on the water and we drove right up the coast of the gulf to the town (I don't know what gulf it was but someone said it was a gulf).
We had pregame meal nearby and it was very good! We only had a few hours before game time, but I still ate as much as I could because it was so darn good. We then played an Italian team and got the win again! It was so fun to see everyone contribute and everyone running the floor well and converting in the open court. I also enjoyed playing zone in the second half because it gave us an opportunity to test it out after only just putting it in a couple of weeks ago. With our length and everyone flying around, we can definitely give some people trouble!Â
After the game we celebrated the win with pizza again and then hit the road to head back to the hotel. We had a karaoke party that night. We played all the songs that you can't help but sing along to! Everything from Justin Bieber to Taylor swift, oldies and new stuff, and we have some pretty funny videos of it. We are quite a talented group. We got back to the hotel and went to bed shortly after. I'm not gonna lie I was pretty tired from all the singing and dancing. It really took it out of me!
Sunday was our last few hours in Venice and a few people got up early again to watch the sunrise. I skipped out the first day to sleep in, so this time I had to do it. I was so tired, but as soon as I walked outside on the rooftop and saw the sun and water and the view of Venice I knew it was worth the lack of sleep! It was very hard leaving Venice because I loved the resort and the relaxed vibe of it so much! But we had one last stop and I had heard that Como was the favorite place of a lot of people, so I was excited for a view of both the water and the mountains!
