SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah head women's basketball coach
Lynne Roberts announced the 2017-18 non-conference schedule today that includes eight games in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. A complete schedule with Pac-12 matches and game times will be released at a later date.
Â
The Utes tip things off with their only exhibition game of the season, taking on Carroll College out of Helena, Mont. The exhibition is set for Thursday, Nov. 2 in Salt Lake City.
Â
Six of Utah's non-conference opponents saw action in postseason play in 2016-17, giving Utah another challenge this winter. The Utes have a winning record against five of its non-conference foes, also meeting five of them for the first time in program history.
Â
"Scheduling is a process," Roberts said. "You want to be competitive in every game that you play, but you also want to test your team. I think this non-conference schedule will present a test. Playing two power five schools, with one on the road early in the season, will be a really good challenge. It will test us to see where we are at heading into Pac-12 play."
Â
"Our goal this year with scheduling was to just keep raising the bar and moving the needle a little bit. Nothing can really prepare you for how good the Pac-12 is, but we wanted to make sure we were testing our team this season."
Â
Nevada starts things off for the Utes outside of exhibition play as they enter the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Friday, Nov. 10. The Utes are 6-0 all-time against the Wolf Pack, including a 80-50 win on the road last season.
Â
Next up, the Utes will hit the road for a pair of games, starting in SEC country with new opponent Alabama on Monday, Nov. 13. The Crimson Tide won 20-plus games last season, making it to the quarterfinals of the WNIT. On Friday, Nov. 17, Utah will head back to their home state to play Weber State in Ogden.
Â
The Utes start a five-game home stand on Monday, Nov. 20 with Big 10 foe Purdue, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year, followed by Incarnate Word on Friday, Nov. 24.
Â
On Monday, Nov. 27, Utah welcomes University of Texas-Arlington to the Jon M. Huntsman Center before taking on the familiar Saint Mary's Gaels on Saturday, Dec. 2. UT Arlington finished last season with 22 wins and a WNIT appearance while Utah is 7-0 all-time against Saint Mary's, who advanced to the WNIT last year on a 20-win season.
Â
Pepperdine comes to Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Dec. 5, with the Utes staying in-state for two road games on Saturday, Dec. 9 and Monday, Dec. 18. Utah clashes with BYU on Dec. 9 in Provo with the Cougars coming off a 20-win season where they tied for second in the West Coast Conference with Saint Mary's and advanced to the WNIT. On Dec. 18, the Utes head to Logan for a game against Utah State with an all-time record of 33-2 over the Aggies.
