Countdown to Kickoff
Classes at the University of Utah began today, signaling the start of the regular season for the Ute football team. Utah's 2017 season-opener is Thursday, Aug. 31 against North Dakota. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. MT in Rice-Eccles Stadium. Note: All practices are closed to the public. Regular-season media policies are now in effect.  Inside the Huddle
Sophomore Tyler Huntleyhas been named the starting quarterback, beating out senior Troy Williams, who started every game last fall. Third on the depth chart is senior Alabama transfer Cooper Bateman… Williams has been elected a team captain for his second year, while Salesi Uhatafe, Lowell Lotulelei, Filipo Mokofisi, Mitch Wishnowsky and Christian Drews are all first-time captains. All are seniors other than Wishnowsky (a junior) … Senior center Lo Falemakareturned to the field last week, but junior cornerback Tyrone Smithis out for the season with an injury. Smith has a redshirt year available … Senior running back Jordan Howard was placed on scholarship last week ... The starting five on the offensive line is set, although it is still to be determined where Uhatafe and Darrin Paulowill play; left guard or right tackle. The other starters are Jackson Bartonat left tackle, Lo Falamaka at center and Jordan Agasivaat right guard … Competition for the placekicking job continues between first-year Utes Matt Gayand Chayden Johnston.
 Roster Update
Coinciding with the start of classes, the roster has grown to 120 players, up from the 105 permitted to participate in preseason camp. Among the additions are nine new walk-ons: quarterback Jason Money, running back Matty Matautia, wide receiver Jake Wright, offensive linemen Jack Hansen and Stratten Wagner, defensive backs Riley Phillips, Zach Boesen, Adan Mao and defensive tackle Scott Foley … Junior college signee Derrick Vickers will not be enrolling at Utah this fall.
 Outside the Lines
The season-opener against North Dakota is University of Utah Staff Appreciation Day. Utah faculty and staff may purchase discounted tickets. Tickets are $20 for bleacher seats (while supplies last) and $10 for standing room, with a limit of four per faculty member.  Ticket Talk
Single-game tickets went on sale for Utah's home games last week and some 400 tickets are still available for the North Dakota game. Fewer than 100 tickets remain for games against San Jose State, Stanford and Arizona State, while around 200 tickets remain for the UCLA and Washington State games. Utah's home finale against Colorado still has several hundred tickets available for purchase.
