PONTE BUGGIANESE, Italy – The Utah women's basketball team took to the court today with its first game of its Italian tour, posting a 53-42 win over TK Hannover.
Â
The Utes only led by six points at halftime, but with a helpful spark off the bench from redshirt junior
Megan Huff, Utah was able to pull away and secure a double-digit victory. Huff, who redshirted last season, tied for a team-high 14 points and 10 boards.
"I tried to do everything that I could because I knew the team would be physical," Huff said. "So I was just focusing on getting my rebounds and scoring when I could."Â
Â
Tilar Clark chipped in another 14 points with a hot hand from the three-point line, hitting 3-for-5 from distance, also contributing four rebounds and two blocks.
Emily Potter scored eight points along with nine rebounds while
Erika Bean turned in a complete game with four points, three assists, four rebounds and a steal.
Â
The Utes led the game by just one point after the first quarter with Huff scoring six of Utah's first 14 points. Clark scored 10 of her points in the second quarter, giving the Utes the 30-24 lead at halftime with the Utes eventually pulling away thanks to strong rebounding from both Huff and Potter.
Â
Not only did the veterans on the team get a chance to get back on the court and shake off the rust, but the newcomers also got key experience with three true freshmen seeing playing time.
Jordan Cruz,
Tori Williams and
Maurane Corbin all saw action against TK Hannover today, donning the Crimson and White for the first time.
Â
Williams added five points to the stat line for the Utes with Cruz securing two rebounds. Corbin also played valuable minutes today, coming away with two points, two assists and two rebounds.
"Everyone played their hardest," Huff said. "There are always things we can fix, but we played good."Â
Â
The Utes move on to Venice tomorrow as they tour the "floating city" before taking on ASD Pallacanestro Inter Club Muggia on Saturday, Aug. 12 at 11:30 a.m. MT (7:30 p.m. Italy time). Â
