SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's basketball posted a 74-60 win over Idaho State in the Jon M. Huntsman Center tonight, improving to 4-0 on the season.
In what head coach
Lynne Roberts called "not their best performance" the Utes were still able to come away with another victory after shooting 11-for-22 from the three with the bench scoring 28 of Utah's 74 points. Utah also finished the game forcing 23 turnovers, scoring 29 points off the Idaho State mistakes.
"I think we have potential to be a great team, but we have been pretty inconsistent" Roberts said. "I thought tonight was our least inspired game. I think we showed our youth tonight, but we won. I think you have to give credit to Idaho State. I think they did a nice job and they were fearless and just kept competing."
Megan Huff continued to lead the Utes in scoring, putting up 17 points, adding seven rebounds and two blocks.
Andrea Torres was Utah's second leading scorer with 11 points along with three rebounds and two steals.
Erika Bean also finished with another complete game at point guard, chipping in eight points, seven rebounds, seven assists, four steals and a block to round out her stat line.
"Bean had eight points and seven assists and I thought she was pretty active out there," Roberts said. "I thought she did a good job of kind of calming the storm a little bit out there, especially in the second half."
The first quarter starts for the Utes haven't been on point this season and it was no different tonight with Utah being held without a field goal until the 6:50 mark when
Daneesha Provo drained a three. It quickly turned into a 15-0 run by the Utes, holding Idaho State scoreless for over five minutes.
The Utes opened the second quarter with a seven-point lead with Torres quickly making in a 10-point game after scoring five straight points to make it 26-16 with 7:36 on the clock. It was a game of runs though as Idaho State cut the Utah lead to 28-24 after an 8-2 scoring slew made it a four-point game with less than five minutes to go in the quarter.
After taking a 35-24 advantage into halftime on a three from
Kiana Moore, the Utes quickly jumped out to a 16-point lead in the third quarter on five unanswered points. Idaho State had an answer though, scoring seven straight
Utah regrouped to take a 35-24 advantage heading into halftime after
Kiana Moore drilled home a three-pointer to end the second quarter and then quickly made it a 16-point lead after Huff score five unanswered to start the third. Idaho State had an answer though, going on a 9-2 run to make it 42-35 with 7:12 to play in the third.
It was back-to-back three-pointers from Moore and
Jordan Cruz that put the Utes back in the driver's seat to end the third quarter, holding a 60-44 lead as they headed to the fourth.
Despite shooting 31-percent from the field in the fourth, the Utes were able to keep control of the game. The Utes led by as many as 20-points after another deep three from Cruz with 6:52 on the clock and even with a 7-0 run by Idaho State late in the quarter, the Utes were able to keep their composure for the 74-60 win.
It's a quick turnaround for the Utes this week as they head to Eastern Washington for a Wednesday night match-up in Cheney, Wash. The game is set for a 5 p.m. MT tip and will be streamed on WatchBigSky.com.
