LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In a game that literally came down to the final shot, Utah was unable to come away with the victory, falling 53-52 in overtime at USC. Utah is 17-11 overall this season and 8-9 in Pac-12 play.
It was a back-and-forth game from start to finish with 13 total lead changes and eight ties with Utah tying the score 45-45 at the end of regulation on an
Emily Potter free throw.
The Utes struck first in the overtime period to take a quick four-point lead on strong paint play from
Megan Jacobs and
Tilar Clark, but after struggling from the free throw line, USC was able to hit the game winning three with just one second on the clock.
"This one hurts," head coach Lynne Robert said. "We were short-handed tonight without
Daneesha Provo and
Megan Huff. I thought our team executed the game plan exactly how we talked about and showed some serious toughness."
"We missed some free throws, the ball didn't bounce our way a few times, and the made the last play. Definitely a tough loss, but no different than any other when it's all said and done, so we need to get some rest and bounce back."
Utah had two players score in double digits with several players also contributing key points in the game.
Emily Potter notched her second straight double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds while Clark added 12 points and six rebounds.
Erika Bean chipped in nine points and three assists while Jacobs had a great second half with seven points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Both teams struggled early, with Utah shooting 31-percent and USC just 30. Despite the struggles offensively, Utah was able to force four turnovers in the quarter while Potter was able to pour in six points to send the game into the second quarter 11-11 all.
Starting the second quarter, it was Potter and USC trading shots with two leads changes and two ties in the first four minutes of the game, but four unanswered points from the Women of Troy put USC up 19-15 with 3:56 on the clock. Clark had an answer, drilling home a three-pointer followed by a steal that ended in a fast break bucket from Clark to put Utah back up 20-19.
USC was able to put together a string of points late in the second quarter to take a four-point lead at halftime, but Utah wasn't done fighting. Potter scored eight more points in the third with Utah going on a 7-0 run late in the quarter to take a 35-34 lead heading into the final period.
The Trojans held a three-point lead with 6:28 on the clock in the fourth quarter, but the Utes tied the score 43-43 at the 4:12 mark on a
Tori Williams layup. It turned into a defensive battle as only four more points were scored with the game heading to overtime at 45-45.
The Utes jumped out to a quick 49-45 lead in the overtime period as Jacobs and Clark stayed aggressive in the lane. With just 34 seconds on the clock, USC was able to make it a two-point game with USC getting the ball back with four seconds on the clock.
