MANHATTAN, Kan. – The University of Utah women's basketball program was defeated in the second round of the 2018 WNIT today, falling to Kansas State 74-57. Utah finished the season 18-14 overall.
It is the second time under the direction of head coach
Lynne Roberts that Utah has finished with 18 wins and the third time they have reached the post-season.
Emily Potter,
Tanaeya BoClair,
Tilar Clark and
Wendy Anae all wrapped up outstanding careers as Utes tonight, helping to lift the program to new heights over the last four seasons.
Utah trailed Kansas State by double digits in the third quarter, but rallied from behind to make it a three-point game. Unfortunately for the Utes, the game of runs didn't end in their favor with the Wildcats going on a run of their own to end the quarter and eventually come away with the win.
"Kansas State shot the ball really well," Roberts said. "We knew that Kayla Goth could score and she did, and then Peyton Williams hit some big shots as well. Every time we tried to make a run, they pushed back and made baskets."
"Huffy and Tay carried us, you could see that from the box score, unfortunately we just didn't shoot well. But I am proud of this team. It was a good year. We got 18 wins and made the post-season again. There is a lot to be proud of."
Megan Huff led the Utes with 23 points, adding nine rebounds and two steals.
Tanaeya BoClair added 14 points along with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Clark also chipped in nine points and a career-best nine rebounds.
The offensive struggles began in the first quarter for the Utes as they went just 1-for-8 from the floor heading into the first media timeout. Utah didn't give in though, going on a 6-0 run sparked by Huff to tie it 10-10 with 1:55 on the clock.
Kansas State countered with a 9-0 run to start the second quarter, taking a 24-12 lead with 7:24 left to play in the quarter. The Utes continued to push back, going on an 8-2 run of their own with all eight points coming at the hands of Huff to make it a six-point game. Utah was unable to score in the final 3:36 of the quarter though, allowing Kansas State to head into halftime up 33-22.
Utah came out of halftime re-energized, quickly going on a 10-2 run thanks in part to back-to-back threes from Huff and
Tori Williams to cut the Wildcat lead to 41-38. The Utes and the Wildcats traded shots again, but KSU was able to take an 11-2 run to the fourth quarter to give them a 12-point lead.
Utah continued to claw back, making it a nine-point game with 4:28 on the clock with strong paint play from BoClair, but yet again Kansas State answered. The Wildcats were able to put together its final run of the game with 11 unanswered points that eventually led to the 74-57 victory.
