LOGAN, Utah – Utah Soccer notched the 250
th win in program history with a 3-0 victory over Utah State on Monday evening.
"What a fantastic road victory today," head coach
Rich Manning said. "The early goal was a big boost and we also a got one from a set piece. I thought our defense was solid as well and that all adds up to a good result.
I was especially proud of the team for playing with such great energy. It was a good sign that we were able to bounce back from the last couple games with a good performance."
The scoring started in the eighth minute when
Hailey Skolmoski notched her third goal of the season. The senior fired a ball from outside the penalty area that beat the keeper to her right side near post.
Paola van der Veen started the play by releasing a long ball down the middle of the pitch that was collected by
Kristin Fairbairn. The junior, making the first start of her career, notched her first point by laying it off to Skolmoski.
"Coach told us to be aggressive and I just wanted to bring energy and play well," Fairbairn said. "I went in thinking 'keep it simple and let the ball do the work'. I was a little nervous."
The Utes had two more early chances with
Makayla Christensen firing one on frame and Van der Veen missing high. Utah State started to come alive in the middle portion of the period but
Carly Nelson was up to the task, making three saves.
Utah piled on the pressure to close the period with five shots in the final five minutes. All that effort did not result in another goal, as the game remained tight heading to the second half.
Utah began the second half aggressively with Van der Veen forcing a corner and Skolmoski getting on the end of the service. The ball fell to the feet of
Aleea Gwerder but a USU defender was able to get in the way to block the attempt.
In the 52
nd minute, the Utes doubled their advantage.
Hailey Stodden's cross was collected by
Natalie Kump, who had her try diverted with the ball falling to Van der Veen. The senior rifled a try right under the crossbar for her third of the season.
The scoring ended in the 80
th minute when
Tavia Leachman netted the first goal of her career, heading in a Kump corner. It was also the first assist of Kump's career as Utah rolled to victory.
"It has been three years coming so it feels incredible," Leachman said. "I am so stoked to get this goal.
We definitely had some tough luck lately but we have been together as a group. All we can do is bounce back. We have nothing to lose and we felt that today was the first day we put the worry aside and got after it."
"I think we are going to build off today and we are not going to settle when we play these games going forward," Fairbairn added.Â
