SAN FRANCISCO – Forward
Dre'Una Edwards has earned her fourth Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honor, it was announced today by Pac-12 officials, bringing Utah's freshman of the week total to seven this season.
The seven Pac-12 Freshman of the Week nods ties for the second most by a program in league history after California had eight in 2015-16. The Utes have been honored eight times total this season, with
Megan Huff also earning player of the week honors in December.
The Utes have had three different players earn freshman of the week honors this season in
Dru Gylten (2),
Andrea Torres (1) and Edwards (4), just the second time in Pac-12 history that a program has had three separate players receive the honor.
Edwards was unstoppable during Utah's road sweep this past weekend as they defeated Washington State 72-68 and Washington 58-43. Utah is 15-1 overall this season and 4-1 in Pac-12 play.
Against Washington State, the Las Vegas, Nev. native put up a career-high 20 points, shooting 9-of-15 from the floor while adding six rebounds, two assists and two steals. She followed it up with her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds against the Huskies, also chipping in a career-high four assists.
Edwards has shot 50-percent or higher in 10 games this season, including in the last five. She is currently third in the Pac-12 in field goal percentage (.552), leading all freshmen in the league. She also currently leads all Pac-12 freshmen in double doubles with her six.
Edwards and the Utes return to action on Friday, Jan. 18 when they host Colorado for their sole game of the week. The game, which will be Lion King Night, is set for a 7 p.m. MT tip in the Huntsman Center and will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
