With 11 days before Utah women's basketball tips off the 2019-20 season, the anticipation for a new year is feeding into weekly practices and meetings as the atmosphere around the program continues to grow. The Utes will play Westminster College on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. MT in the Jon M. Huntsman Center for an exhibition game.
One of the new faces fans can see on Oct. 31 will be sharp-shooter
Brynna Maxwell. The true freshman comes to Utah after being named the 3A State Player of the Year for Gig Harbor High School out of Gig Harbor, Wash. She also earned Tacoma Tribune All-Area Player of the Year, Washington Ms. Basketball and The Gateway's Gig Harbor Female Athlete of the Year as a senior.
Q: What is your earliest memory of basketball and what was special about that moment?
A: "My earliest memory is when I was four playing in a YMCA basketball game. There was one other girl in the whole league and my team was playing against hers. My goal was to not let her score the entire game. She didn't."
Q: What was it like growing up in your hometown? Any specific memories that stand out?Â
A: "It was really fun growing up in Gig Harbor. It is such a small town that there are only two high schools and we hated each other. We were crosstown rivals and every time we played one another in any sport the whole town came to watch. It was always really intense, but a really fun atmosphere."
Q: How has your family influenced you on and off the court?
A: "Both my parents played basketball in college and almost everyone in my family is a die hard sports fan, so basketball is basically in my blood. My dad broke his high school shooting record when he played and he's the one who first taught me how to shoot. My family also puts a huge emphasis on leadership and standing up for what you believe in, and I feel like that plays a key roll in to who I am as a basketball player and person."
Q: Who would you say you take after most in your family and why?
A: "I definitely take after my dad the most. We both not only look alike but are both really stubborn and huge basketball junkies. We have the exact same sense of humor and he's one of my best friends."
Q: What about the sport of basketball made you fall in love with it?
A: "It's hard to pick one thing that made me fall in love with basketball. I love all of it, even the smell of a ball and I used to sleep with a basketball every night before game days. I think I fell in love with it the second my parents set up a mini hoop in the entryway and gave me my first ball."
Q: Was there ever a time that you thought college basketball wouldn't be in your future? If so, what made you change your mind?
A: "It's always been a dream of mine to play basketball in college. I really started working toward it though when I got into eighth grade and saw my first Pac-12 game. That's when I knew I wanted to play Division I basketball."
Q: What is your dream job and why?
A: "My dream job would be playing in the WNBA someday. It has been for as long as I can remember."
Q: What is something people might not know about you?
A: "Something people might not know about me is that I have a twin brother who is 12 minutes younger than me. We are exact opposites but we are best friends."
Q: What about the University of Utah made you want to continue your career here?
A: "Utah was the first school to start recruiting me and it meant a lot that they took a chance and believed in me before anyone else did. I love the team and the coaching staff and Salt Lake City is beautiful with all of the mountains."
Q: What has been your favorite part about playing basketball at Utah so far?
A: "My favorite part of playing at the U so far is the challenge of it. Everyone can play, so I'm always getting pushed in some way to get better. It's been super fun and I can not wait for the season to start."
