SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball program posted a 30-point win in its only exhibition game of the preseason, beating the Westminster Griffins 88-58.
The Utes played in front of 6,775 fans today in the Jon M. Huntsman Center as part of their annual "Future Scholars Day." Utah partners with local elementary schools each year for its exhibition match, bringing in a fun and loud atmosphere for the children and the student-athletes on the court.
"That's why the attendance piece is such a big part of building a program," head coach Lynne Roberts said. "My vision for this program is to get where we have 6,000 fans a game here screaming like that whether they are six or 60. It is not a secret formula that the teams that win and get on the national map have a fan base behind them. So, we are getting there and it has been fun to see that grow over the past four years."
The Utes shot 55-percent from the floor while holding the Griffins to 40-percent shooting including going just 26-percent from the three. Utah out-rebounded Westminster 44-23 while also forcing 12 turnovers with the Utes outscoring the Griffins 52-14 on bench points.
Utah finished the game with four double-digit scorers that included two true freshmen that led the way. Brynna Maxwell finished the game with a team-high 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor and 3-of-6 from the three, adding three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Lola Pendande added 12 points, going perfect from the field (6-of-6), also contributing four rebounds and two steals. Niyah Becker opened her sophomore campaign with 11 points and five rebounds with Maurane Corbin returning to the court to score 10 points and lead the Utes in rebounds with seven.
"We are going to be a work in progress because we are so young," Roberts said. "We definitely have some phenomenal upperclassmen but they are outnumbered. As it goes with youth, there will be amazing days and some challenging days. As coaches, we have to see the big picture and not get too high or too low."
"I know that their 'want' is exactly where we want it to be. They want what I want, and as coaches that is how you want it to be. If that is the case, then the rest can get fixed. I know we are young, but it is a talented youth. They showed me this week that they want to be great. They put in the work and they have the intensity and focus to get better. They are fun to coach. This league is no joke, but that is what we signed up for. We are excited for it."
The Utes got off to a slow start in the first quarter with Westminster keeping things close through the seven-minute mark in the game, but Utah went on to finish the quarter shooting 81-percent from the floor. Utah went on an 8-2 run late in the quarter to jump out to a 17-11 lead with 1:10 remaining before Kemery Martín got a late steal and dished it to Corbin for an easy bucket to send Utah into the next quarter up nine.
Maxwell scored eight of her 15 points in the second quarter, shooting 3-of-4 from the floor and a perfect 2-for-2 from the arc in the 10-minute period. The Utes led by as many as 20 points in the quarter, but a late 8-0 run by the Griffins made it an 11-point game (44-33) heading into halftime.
The Utes got back on track in the third quarter, holding the Griffins to just 35-percent shooting from the floor while forcing seven turnovers in the period. Utah started the quarter on a 10-2 run, eventually taking a 25-point lead with a late layup from Martín.
All 18 of Utah's fourth quarter points came from the bench, outscoring the Griffins 18-13 in the quarter. Corbin scored six of her 10 points in the quarter after going 3-for-3 from the floor while Ola Makurat commanded the boards in the final quarter, grabbing four rebounds.
The Utes will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 5 when they officially open the 2019-20 season at Cincinnati. The game is set for a 5 p.m. MT tip with a live stream provided on GoBearCats.com.
