HONOLULU, Hawaii – The University of Utah women's basketball team put together a well-balanced game against the UTSA Roadrunners today, coming away with a 91-45 win to improve to 3-3 overall this season.
Utah shot 56-percent from the floor (38-of-67) while holding UTSA to 27-percent from the floor and 26-percent from the three. Utah forced 19 turnovers in the game, scoring 35 points off turnovers while also out-rebounding the Roadrunners 45-30.
Brynna Maxwell dominated the arc today, scoring a career-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting that included going 6-for-10 from the three. Niyah Becker reached double-digits for the third time this season, recording 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals with Lola Pendande adding 12 points on near perfect shooting (6-of-7).
Maxwell earned Bank of Hawaii Classic MVP honors while Pendande was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Julie Brosseau rounded out Utah's double-digit scorers with 11 points. She was 5-of-10 from the floor, including going 2-for-4 from the three along with five rebounds, one assist and a steal.
"Our goal coming into this was to have a complete game," head coach Lynne Roberts said. "Obviously there are things we need to clean up, but the things that we focused on and the things that we wanted to do, we did them for 40 minutes. We shot the ball well, I thought we passed it really well."
"Everything that we are trying to get these guys to buy into and improve upon, they are doing. This week we got better. It is starting to come together and you can feel the momentum and the vibe a little more, which is great. I am proud of us and I thought we played great."
Utah had another solid start on both sides of the ball, holding UTSA to just 10-percent shooting in the first quarter and only four points. The Utes were able to take a 23-4 lead into the second quarter on a17-2 run that included three straight three-pointers, two from Becker, to jump out to their 19-point advantage.
UTSA started the second quarter on a 6-0 run to make it a 13-point game, but the Utes stayed composed and in control, leading by as many as 23 points in the quarter. The Utes shot 53-percent from the floor in the second quarter with Maxwell scoring six of her eight first half points in the period, shooting a perfect 2-for-2 from the three.
The Utes continued its solid offensive performance in the third quarter, scoring 12 unanswered points to start the period, including eight from Maxwell. UTSA didn't score until the 6:27 mark in the quarter with Utah forcing five turnovers in the period to take a 67-33 lead heading into the fourth.
Brosseau scored nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter with the Utes hitting five of their last six shots of the game, leading by as many as 47 in the period. Utah shot 62-percent from the floor in the final quarter, leading to the Utes third straight win of the season.
Utah will return to action on Friday, Nov. 29 when they take on in-state rival BYU in Provo. The game is set for a 7 p.m. MT tip on BYU TV.
