SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Utah women's basketball team edged out the Nevada Wolf Pack 68-62 on Saturday afternoon in the Jon M. Huntsman Center for its sixth consecutive win to improve to 6-3 on the season.
Despite running into turnover troubles and trailing for over 20 minutes of the game, the Utes dug in and found a way to win, gaining momentum off their three-point shooting. The Utes shot 50-percent from the arc through four quarters, hitting key shots from beyond the three-point line down the stretch for the six-point victory.
"We need to give Nevada some credit because they came in here and competed, shot the ball well and they were fearless," head coach Lynne Roberts said. "For us, it was two steps forward and one step back in the course of a game. I thought our two seniors did a nice job in the fourth quarter because they came in and just set the tone defensively and showed their poise and experience."
"There were definitely frustrating moments in the game, but all wins are good and I am proud of our team for finding a way. Nothing seemed to be going right in that third quarter, and in the fourth quarter we found a way and we won."
Utah finished with four double-digit scorers led by freshman Lola Pendande who put up 12 points, a team-high seven rebounds and three blocks. The Utes also had a trio of players who scored 11 points each in senior Kiana Moore, freshman Brynna Maxwell and junior Julie Brosseau.
Moore finished the game shooting 4-of-8 from the floor with three assists with fellow senior Daneesha Provo also making her return to the court today. Provo got right back to business on defense, finishing with four rebounds and three steals, also scoring four points.
Brosseau controlled the point today with her 11 points, also tying her season-highs in assists (5) and rebounds (5). Maxwell continued her dominance from the arc against the Wolf Pack, knocking down three from beyond the three-point line to give her 28 threes this season and her sixth-straight game in double-digits.
Utah was able to get off to a hot start in the first quarter, shooting 71-percent from the floor while taking off on an 8-0 run sparked by four unanswered points from Moore to take a 15-6 lead. Utah's offense stumbled late in the quarter though, going 1-of-10 from the floor with Nevada going on a 16-2 run to take a 22-17 lead into the second quarter.
The Utes held Nevada to just 33-percent shooting in the second quarter including going 0-of-3 from the arc, but turnovers plagued Utah in the quarter after committing seven. Despite the turnover woes, Utah was able to shoot 57-percent from the arc that included back-to-back threes from Niyah Becker with less than two minutes to go, sending Utah into halftime with a 34-33 lead.
The offensive struggles continued for the Utes into the third quarter after they committed eight turnovers in an eight-minute span with Nevada going on a 13-2 run to take a 46-38 lead with 2:14 on the clock. It was Utah's perseverance that shined through though, answering with a 7-0 run that was capped off by a pivotal three by Andrea Torres with 49 seconds remaining in the quarter to send the Utes into the fourth down by just two.
Nevada held a two-point lead with 5:56 remaining in the game, but the combination of Maxwell and Moore would give the Utes a 61-57 lead with 4:08 on the clock as Moore would score seven of her 11 points in the fourth. Maxwell hit a crucial shot from beyond the arc at the 5:11 mark to put the Utes up by one with Moore hitting her dagger three just seconds later to give the Utes the four-point cushion.
The Wolf Pack would make it a two-point game with 2:49 remaining, but Brosseau went on to score five of Utah's final seven points of the game to help keep the Utes in the win column.
Utah will return to action when they host the Providence Friars on Monday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. MT in the Huntsman Center. The game will be streamed on UtahUtes.com and will also air on the radio on ESPN 700.
