SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team will head to California for spring break for two matches this week, taking on UC Irvine on Wednesday, March 13 and Cal Poly on Saturday, March 16.Â
The Utes are 12-5 overall this season, but will look to bounce back after dropping matches to No. 20 UCLA and No. 19 USC this past weekend. The Utes played against UC Irvine last season, beating them 6-1 and will face Cal Poly for the first time in the
Roeland Brateanu era.Â
Utah's match against UC Irvine will take place at 2 p.m. MT at the Anteater Tennis Stadium in Irvine, Calif. with their match against Cal Poly on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. MT. Despite their two losses to top-20 teams this past weekend, the Utes still had strong performances in singles play with
David Micevski putting up two ranked wins. He got started against UCLA, beating No. 98 Keegan Smith 6-3, 6-4 to put the Utes on the scoreboard.Â
Against USC, Micevski posted a 7-6, 6-3 win over No. 51 Logan Smith, keeping him undefeated against top-100 opponents this year. He is 10-2 overall this season in singles play.Â
Russell Benkaim and
Dan Little also picked up two singles wins this weekend, starting against UCLA. Benkaim came away victorious against Patrick Zahraj of UCLA on court four, winning 6-3, 6-4.Â
Little followed it up with a huge top-20 win on Saturday against USC. He beat No. 16 Brandon Holt, 7-5, 7-5 to give him his ninth singles win of the season and his fourth against ranked opponents.Â
After Utah's trip west this week, they will get back into Pac-12 play when they take on Washington on the road on March 29 and Oregon on March 31.Â
