SALT LAKE CITY –The 41
st ranked University of Utah men's tennis program is set to open Pac-12 conference play this weekend, with two home matches at the Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes will first face off against No. 20 UCLA on Friday, March 8
th, followed by a match against No. 19 USC on Saturday, March 9
th.
Utah's match against UCLA will begin at 4 p.m. MT on Friday, with its battle against USC taking place at 2 p.m. MT on Saturday, with both matches will be held in the Eccles Tennis Center on the University of Utah campus. Both matches will be
live streamed with live updates also available on Twitter (@UtahTennis) and Instagram (@UtahTennis).
The Utes have faced off four times against UCLA since
Roeland Brateanu took over to the program, with a record of 0-4 against the Bruins. Utah has also faced off against USC four times during Brateanu's run as head coach, with a record of 0-4 against the Trojans.
The Utes are coming off another pair of wins this past Friday and Sunday, defeating Old Dominion (4-0) and Denver (4-0) to improve to 12-3 overall this season.
Against Old Dominion on Friday, the Utes started off strong by capturing the doubles point against the Monarchs. On court No. 3, the duo of
Joe Woolley and
Russell Benkaim were able to top Nicola Vidal and Luca Maldoner with a score of 6-2.
Azat Hankuliyev and
Dan Little then secured the point at the No. 2 position with a win over Jannik Giesse and Oliver Tobisch, with a final score of 6-2.
David Micevski then kept things rolling going into singles, notching the first win against Francois Musitelli with a score of 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot. Then, on the No. 4 court, Benkaim was able to knock off Nicola Vidal, 6-4, 6-2, to put the Utes up 3-0. To then seal the victory against the 40
thMonarchs, freshman
Mathias Gavelin finished things off with a win at the No. 5 positon against Luca Maldoner with a score of 7-5,7-5, to sweep Old Dominion 4-0.
Then on Sunday in their match against Denver, Utah was also able to start things off strong by winning the doubles point.
Joe Woolley and
Russell Benkaim notched the day's first victory at the No. 3 spot, as they were able to defeat Daniel Krulig and Eric Morris with a final score of 6-1. To then seal the doubles point,
Azat Hankuliyev and
Dan Little pitched in a win of their own on court No. 2, knocking off Mattia Ros and Pedro Fernandez De Valle, 6-2.
Benkaim then kept things rolling in singles with a win at the No. 4 position, as he was able to top Ignatius Castelino with a final score of 6-3, 6-0.
Slava Shainyan then followed with a victory of his own at the No. 3 spot, defeating Pedro Fernandez De Valle 6-2, 6-2. Then, for the second straight match in a row, freshman
Mathias Gavelin was able to seal the victory for the Utes on court No. 5, defeating Daniel Krulig 6-3, 7-5, to complete the 4-0 sweep against Denver.
