SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball program will be represented well at the 2019 FIBA U19 Women's World Cup in Thailand with sophomore
Niyah Becker representing Canada and incoming freshman
Lola Pendande representing Spain.
Becker is one of 12 athletes for Team Canada, representing the Pac-12 with Arizona State's Taya Hanson, while Pendande joins 15 other teammates on Team Spain. The tournament begins July 20 and runs through July 28 where they will crown a winner.
July 20-23 is the group phase of the tournament with each team playing against all other teams in its own group. July 24-28, all teams that qualify for the Round of 16 will then battle for a spot in the quarterfinals and eventually to the championship game.
Canada is in Group A with Mozambique, Latvia and Thailand while Spain joins Colombia, Japan and Germany in Group D. Canada gets started against Latvia on Saturday, July 20 while Spain's first game is against Japan on Sunday, July 21.
Both Becker and Pendande have extensive international experience on their resume. This will be Becker's second time playing at the FIBA World Cup, playing for the U17 team in 2016 when Team Canada placed sixth.
Becker also played for Canada at the 2018 Commonwealth Games with teammate
Daneesha Provo in Australia. Pendande has played for Team Spain at the FIBA European Championships in 2016 and 2017, averaging 4.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in 2016.
