SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah women's basketball head coach
Lynne Roberts announced today that senior
Daneesha Provo has been granted an extension of her five-year clock and will be eligible to play for the Utes in 2019-20.
"Obviously, I am very happy for our program and team," Roberts said. "Undoubtedly, Daneesha makes us better. But even more so, I am really thrilled for Daneesha personally. This has been such a challenging nine months for her, so it is exciting to see her get the opportunity to further her education and play her final season here with the Utes. We are extremely grateful."
Provo will be pursuing a second undergraduate degree in sociology after graduating in May with a degree in human development and family services. She was awarded an additional season based on limited competition in two of her four seasons along with extenuating circumstances beyond her control.
"I'm super excited for the opportunity to come back and play another year," Provo said. "This means the world to me to come back and play again with such a great team. I am also stoked to be coached by Coach Roberts one more year."
The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, native started in the first 13 games of last season before suffering a season ending injury against Arizona State in January. At the time of her injury, she ranked in the top-15 in the Pac-12 in field goal percentage (.511), steals per game (2.1) and three-point field goals made per game (1.8).
"One thing I realized is that everything always ends up working out, sometimes even better than I can imagine," she said. "I was in a hard place these last few months, not knowing where I'd be, and that was really hard for me. This ACL injury has taught me a lot about myself and tested me in so many ways, but I always remember God always has me. I'm very thankful for this program, team, coaching staff and the University for standing behind me to get this sixth year."
Provo has played in 72 career games for the Utes with 28 starts. After transferring from Clemson, her first season with the Utes was in 2016-17 where she only averaged 3.5 points per game before having a breakout junior year in 2017-18.
As a junior, she went from shooting just 15-percent from the three-point line to 40-percent, finishing the year ranked eighth in the Pac-12 in three-point percentage. She averaged 12.3 points per game in 2017-18, scoring in double-digits in 18 games.
Last season, Provo was putting up 13.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game. She notched a career-high 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting against Long Beach State in November.
Provo and the Utes will tip off the season on Oct. 31 when they host Westminster College for an exhibition match. The game will start at 11 a.m. MT in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
