SALT LAKE CITY – Utah volleyball finished out its opening weekend going 3-0 after defeating No. 23 Cal Poly in five sets on Saturday, August 31 in the Huntsman Center.
Â
It's the first time Utah volleyball has beaten two AVCA ranked teams to start the season in program history.
Â
Utah dug deep in the fifth set winning three of the final four points to stay perfect on the weekend as
Kenzie Koerber and
Dani Drews got the final kills to earn the victory.
Â
Koerber was named tournament MVP after setting a career high with 19 kills against Cal Poly. She also had 15 digs and five blocks. The 19 kills was a career high for the junior.
Â
Drews,
Berkeley Oblad and
Brianna Doehrmann all made the all-tournament team as well after great weekends.
Â
Cal Poly controlled most of the first set, but Utah hung around and closed the set on a 4-0 run to win 26-24. With
Leah Schmidt serving tough, Drews got the final kill to put the Utes up early.
Â
The Mustangs evened things up in the second set and it was all Utah in the third. The Utes held a one-point lead at 14-13 and then Utah ran off seven straight and kept their foot on the gas taking the set 25-16.
Â
Cal Poly proved to be resilient once again in the fourth set. Utah went on a big run, but fell just short as the Mustangs evened things up once again. Trailing by seven, the Utes got within two, but Cal Poly still forced a fifth.
Â
In the decisive fifth set, the Utes held an early 5-1 lead forcing Cal Poly into an early timeout. The Mustangs just wouldn't go away, tying things up at 12 and that's when Utah stepped up one more time. Koerber got the next two kills and then Drews got the final one to keep Utah unbeaten on the first weekend.
Â
Drews had 20 kills, 18 digs and 5.0 blocks on the night.
