SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball team came away with its first win of the Pac-12 season, beating the USC Trojans on Sunday afternoon to improve to 8-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
It was a game of runs with the Utes holding a six-point lead with under a minute to play in the third quarter with the Trojans coming back to take a one-point advantage with 8:55 remaining in the game. USC held a five-point lead with 4:35 remaining in the game, but the Utes would go on to hit three straight from beyond the arc that included two clutch buckets from Daneesha Provo to take a two-point lead with under three minutes to play.
Provo would remain steady for the remainder of the game, knocking down two free throws with under a minute to play to extend the Utes lead. USC would convert two free throws of their own with 37 seconds on the clock to make it a two-point game, but strong defense and a pivotal defensive rebound by Lola Pendande as time expired gave the Utes the win.
Utah finished the game shooting 37-percent from the floor and 40-percent from the three, hitting 11 threes in the game. The Utes outrebounded the Trojans 40-37 and outscored them 34-3 in bench points, thanks in large part to Provo's standout performance.
The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, native scored a season-high and team-high 17 points, finishing the game shooting 4-of-6 from the floor, 3-of-4 from the three and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. She added three rebounds, one assist and a team-high two steals.
Kemery Martín had a breakout game with a career-high 12 points in 12 minutes of play, shooting 4-of-7 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line, also contributing two rebounds. Dru Gylten also put together a balanced game, adding eight points, a season-high 10 assists and five rebounds.

It was also the fifth time this season that Utah has converted on 10-or-more from the three with the season-high of 14 coming against BYU in November.
TALKING ABOUT THE GAME: Head coach Lynne Roberts
"It was exactly how every game we've played against USC in the last two or three years has been. It was physical and it was close. They are physical and aggressive and they do a good job. It wasn't a perfect game, which I like that we still won, meaning we showed some toughness in the fourth quarter. We came back to win and we showed some grit and toughness."
"It has been a tough stretch with who we have played with how the schedule worked out, so we really needed this one. I am proud of our team for finding a way."
"I thought Daneesha was the run. She hit two threes and got to the free throw line and defensively she was everywhere. That is the Daneesha we have been waiting for. That was really positive for us, to see her playing the way that she is capable of playing."
