Dru Gylten enters her junior season with valuable experience for the Utes, starting and playing in 61 games at Utah. She has cemented herself as one of the best passers in Utah history, and in the Pac-12 the past two seasons and will look to continue her upward trend in the women's college basketball world.
UtahUtes.com caught up with the Rapid City, S.D., native to talk about her dream job after graduating from the U., who her favorite professional basketball player is, and what she thinks it takes to be a great passer in the game of basketball.
Q: What has it been like being ranked in the top-30 nationally in assists in your first two seasons?
A: Well actually this is new news to me, but I feel very honored and blessed. I love passing the ball and giving my teammates the best opportunities to score and be successful as well. Passing is one of my favorite qualities of my game, and I can't wait to see where I end up nationally in assists after my career at Utah is finished.
Q: What was your favorite game from the last two seasons and why?
A: The one game that always comes to mind when asked about the two previous seasons is the game against Stanford at home my redshirt freshmen year when we upset them while they were ranked as well as the first win verse Stanford at home in Utah history. Coming into this program a main goal of mine was to be a part of a change and making this program better than I found it and that game was a big step for the program. I still remember that feeling of dribbling the ball down the left side of the court and finishing the lay-up to close the game. It was such a great feeling.
Q: What is something you want to improve on this next season?
A: I want to improve on my overall scoring. I am a very unselfish player, but I want to have the overall confidence in myself to score when it is needed. Specifically, I have been working on my jump shot, in order to become a more versatile scorer overall.
Q: What did it mean to you to break the 300-career assist mark as just a sophomore? Â
A: Once again, I had no idea where my career assist mark was. But super honored and blessed to have been able to assist my teammates in that many baskets, and I cannot wait for all the others to come in the future.
Q: What are some of the things that go into being a talented passer?
A: Vision I would say is the most important piece of being a talented passer, without some type of special vision you can't stand out as a passer. As well as ball-handling skills, you have to be able to have control of the basketball in order to pass it. Finally, having that connection with your teammates is key as well, once your teammates have played with you for a while you will be on the same page as you and know how, when, and during what types of plays you like to pass the ball.
Q: How would you describe your style of play in just three words?
A: Hardworking, unselfish, crafty with passing.
Q: Who is your favorite professional basketball player and why?
A: Becky Hammon would be my favorite if she was still playing, but knowing she grew up in South Dakota and has done all the amazing things she did as a player and now as a coach in the NBA; it's inspiring and her dedication and mindset is something I admire.
Q: What has been your favorite part about living in Utah?
A: All the amazing features the state of Utah has to offer. I love the city-feel SLC has, yet I love that you can venture outside the city and see all what nature has to offer us, especially the national and state parks.
Q: What do you plan to study at the U. and why?
A: Currently I am studying kinesiology with two minors in business and pediatric clinical research. I really enjoy learning about the human body and how amazingly complex we are. Hopefully one day I can get accepted in PA school and continue on expanding my horizons.
Q: What is your dream job after graduating from the U. and why?
A: A physician's assistant (PA) would be my dream job. I love the field of medicine and the versatility that profession comes with is what opens my eyes to that career path.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing at the U. so far?
A: My favorite part is all the people I have met, the friendships I have been able to create, and the memories we have all made over the years. These people have impacted my life in so many ways, and I will always remember these days. Most importantly these friendships will last me a life time.
