Niyah Becker enters her third year with the program having played in 61 games her first two seasons. Her experience on the court will be valuable as she heads into her junior campaign with new goals and a hunger that has her ready to return to the court.
UtahUtes.com caught up with the Winnipeg, Manitoba, native to talks about her playing style, how she felt scoring a career-high 18 points last season, and what her dream job is after graduating from the U.
Q: Â What has it been like getting to play in every single game in your first two seasons in the Pac-12 and what have you learned?
A: It has been awesome to have played in every game so far. I learn more and become more comfortable and confident each game. The biggest thing I have learned is to always play in the moment and not dwell on the past or the future. The only thing I can control is how hard I play in the moment, and I hate looking back thinking I could have done something differently to have helped our team.
Q: What was your favorite game from the last two seasons and why?
A: My favorite game from the last two seasons was the Washington game we played in the first round of last season's Pac-12 Tournament. It was the first time we had made it past the first round with Coach Roberts in the tournament and it was a close and exciting game all the way through.
Q: What is something you want to improve on this next season?
A: Something I want to improve on for next season is increasing my three-point consistency.
Q: What was your favorite road trip from the last two seasons and why?
A: My favorite road trip from the last two years was the team trip we took to Oxnard, Calif. where we got to spend the weekend together as a team and just got to relax and spend time together before going to the Pac-12 Tournament.
Q: Did anything feel different going into the Weber State game last year when you scored a career-high 18 points?
A: Nothing really felt different beforehand that I can remember, but once we started playing I felt really confident and as a team were playing good and having fun together, which just made us all play better.
Q: What kind of advantages do you have being a left-handed shooter?
A: My advantages are that defenders aren't use to closing out to left-handed players so closing out on me might be unnatural to them, which gives me an extra second or so advantage to shoot or beat them off the dribble.
Q: How would you describe your style of play in just three words?
A: Versatile, long, and athletic.
Q: Who is your favorite professional basketball player and why?
A: My favorite professional basketball player right now is Bridget Carleton because she is Canadian and has done really well in the WNBA this season. I admire her work ethic and how she always competes.
Q: What has been your favorite part about living in Utah?
A: My favorite part about living in Utah is always getting to be around my teammates and friends. We all live close together and love to explore Utah, whether it is going on hikes, floating down the rivers on tubes, or just having movie nights together.
Q: What do you plan to study at the U. and why?
A: My major is strategic communications and I plan to minor in human development and family and consumer studies. I chose strategic communications as my major because I am interested in the social and visual aspects of communications.
Q: What is your dream job after graduating from the U. and why?
A: My dream job after graduating from the U is to play professionally. I want to be able to play for as long as I can and be able to travel the world doing what I love.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing at the U. so far?Â
A: My favorite part about playing at the U so far has been being able to play in the Pac-12 against some of the best teams and players in the country. Every game is an exciting game that pushes us all to compete to our best ability and have fun playing together.
