LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Utah women's basketball team battled the No. 1-seeded Oregon Ducks today in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament, but fell 79-59. The Utes are 14-17 overall this season.
Utah put together a strong first quarter, going shot-for-shot with the Ducks, eventually taking a 17-11 lead on the backend of five straight points from sophomore
Dru Gylten with 1:29 on the clock. The Utes shot 50-percent from the floor in the first quarter (8-16) with Gylten scoring seven points to give Utah a 19-16 lead heading into the second.
Oregon would answer in the second quarter though as the Utes would hit a scoring drought, breaking the score open with an 18-2 run to take a 36-23 lead with 3:29 remaining in the period. The Utes were held to just 10 points and 18-percent shooting in the second quarter while the Ducks would take a 16-point advantage into halftime.
The Utes would make it a 13-point game with 5:53 remaining in the third quarter on a three-pointer from freshman
Brynna Maxwell, but another run late by the Ducks would put them back up by 20 to end the period. Utah was able to force six turnovers in the third quarter on defense, but the Ducks would capitalize off the Utes' nine in the period to gain the large lead.
Utah continued to fight in the fourth quarter with freshman
Lola Pendande scoring seven of her 15 points in the final period as the Utes would go on a 9-0 run and eventually make it a 12-point game with 4:38 to go in the game. Oregon would counter though, as the Utes would be held without a field goal for the remainder of the game.
The Utes finished the game shooting 40-percent from the floor and just 27-percent from the three with the Ducks going 50-percent overall and 52-percent from the arc. Utah outscored Oregon 30-26 in the paint, but the Ducks scored 15 points on fast breaks and 16 off turnovers.
LEADERS
Utah's two leading scorers against the Ducks were true freshmen in Maxwell and Pendande. For the second straight game, the Utah underclassmen would shine, scoring 49 of Utah's 59 points today.
Pendande recorded her third double-double of the season, leading the Utes with 15 points and 10 rebounds, also chipping in a steal and an assist. Maxwell knocked down 12 points, shooting 4-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-5 from the three, adding two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Gylten also finished the game with nine points, leading the Utes in assists and steals with four and two, respectively.
TALKING ABOUT THE GAME: Head Coach Lynne Roberts, freshmen Brynna Maxwell & Lola Pendande
Roberts: "First off, congratulations to Oregon. They are so tough. I do think they have the potential to win the whole thing, the national championship. A few teams in our conference have that potential. So, congratulations to them and I wish them all the luck."
Roberts: "I'm really proud of our team. The score isn't indicative of the fight that was out there by our team. Other than that second quarter, we played them completely even in the first, third and fourth. I am proud of our young players for that and this is just great experience for them to be in that environment and that atmosphere. I was proud to coach them today. They gave it everything they had, they followed the game plan and they represented our program really well."
Maxwell: "One of the goals for this game was to leave it all on the floor, and I think we did. I think every player on that team poured their heart out, and I'm really proud of them."
Pendande: "I think one of the things I can take into next year, especially for me because I am an international player, is to get used to the rules and the toughness of the game. And then to just work through it, work harder than I have been working throughout my whole career – and then go get them next year."
