SALT LAKE CITY – The future is bright for the University of Utah women's basketball program with its Top 20 recruiting class for the 2020-21 season starting to bring in postseason awards as they wrap up their high school careers.
Both Kennady McQueen (Henefer, Utah/North Summit HS) and Peyton McFarland (Boise, Idaho/Boise HS) won their respective state's Gatorade Player of the Year award, which was announced last week. The Gatorade Player of the Year award is in its 35th year, recognizing outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement.
McQueen and McFarland are now finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award, which will be announced later this month.
McQueen led North Summit to a 24-2 record and an appearance in the 2A state championship game this year, averaging 20.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 4.5 steals per game. She is a three-time all-state and all-region selection, earning Region 16 MVP as a senior.
McFarland recorded 16.2 points, 9.1 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 steals per game her senior season at Boise HS, staying consistent all season with a .600 field goal percentage (121-for-201). She is a four-time all-Southern Idaho Conference selection and is ranked as the nation's No. 10 post player in the class of 2020 on ESPN.com.
McFarland and McQueen will be on campus with the Utes this fall, also joined by Donna Ntambue (Montreal, Quebec). Ntambue is ranked the No. 13 recruit coming out of Canada by Crown Scout Girls Rankings after becoming the first female player to earn RSEQ player, rookie and defensive player of the year awards in the same season (2018-19).
