UtahUtes.com recently caught up with former Ute and All-American Julie Krommenhoek. After graduating from the U., Krommenhoek spent time overseas and now owns a gym in Phoenix.
Q: What degree did you graduate with from the U and why did you choose that field of study?
A: Exercise and Sports Science. I have always enjoyed learning about the body and being healthy. I knew I would enjoy the learning in those classes and be able to find a job/career that I loved doing.
Q: What was your experience like getting to play basketball overseas?
A: My experience was awesome. I was very fortunate to go to a beautiful place, Switzerland, and the people and team opened their arms and homes to me. It was so great to live in another culture and play the sport I love.
Q: How was it different playing professional basketball compared to collegiate basketball?
A: Definitely not as structured. There was a learning curve especially with being coached in Italian. I had to quickly learn at least the basketball lingo in Italian.
Q: How do you feel playing for Utah women's basketball prepared you for your time overseas?
A: I definitely knew I was prepared after playing for Elaine Elliott. She was an amazing coach who pushed us and totally prepared us.
Having the great support from the university and the great facilities made it such a positive experience. I was prepared physically, mentally and emotionally.

Q: What was your favorite part about playing overseas?
A: Living in another country, getting immersed in the culture and playing the sport I love.
Q: After finishing your career overseas, what was your next step?
A: I got into financial planning for a few years, and although I enjoyed it, I knew my passion and love was sports, health and fitness. So, I pivoted and started running boot camps and then opened up my own gym. In the meantime, my dad pushed me to get into refereeing - and so I did.
Q: What has your experience been like opening and owning your own fitness gym?
A: It has been a process for sure, a lot to learn, but very rewarding. I get so much joy and pleasure in helping people transform and get their moxie back.

Q: What drew you to the profession of refereeing for women's basketball?
A: My dad actually is the one who pushed me to try refereeing, as I didn’t even think of it. After some hesitation, I said OK and have not looked back ever since. I love it. It completely filled the void I was feeling in missing playing. Now I get to be a part of the game and be challenged every night I go out there. I couldn’t ask for two better careers.
Q: What is your favorite part about being a collegiate ref?
A: Being a part of the game, actually being on the court with the players.
Traveling and being in different awesome arenas, and even the challenge of getting better every game. Each game brings different challenges.

Q: What is home life like with two careers and four kids?
A: We enjoy spending time together, getting outside and doing different activities and then just chilling. They are amazing kids and help me take time to smell the roses and enjoy life.
