After a record breaking freshman season,
Brynna Maxwell is ready to hit the court for her sophomore campaign. In 2019-20, she became the first freshman for Utah since joining the Pac-12 to earn Pac-12 All-Conference honors after starting all 31 games and leading the conference in three-pointers made.
Maxwell and her competitive spirit caught up with UtahUtes.com to chat about what her favorite road trip was last season, what she wants to improve on for this season and what she plans to study during her time at the U.
Q: What was your experience like earning a spot on the All-Pac-12 team as just a freshman?Â
A: Honestly, that was never my goal. It was an awesome surprise, but my end goals are not to accumulate accolades, it's to cut down nets and we still have a lot of business to take care of in that area.
Q: What was your favorite game from last season and why?
A: Definitely against the team down south. It was at their place and the place was packed. It was an amazing atmosphere. The game was close the entire way until Dru hit a clutch free throw to send the game into overtime and we never looked back after that.
Q: What is something you want to improve on this next season?
A: There are a couple things I want to work on. I really want to improve my on and off ball defense. I got hit with a lot of screens last year and I want to change that. Offensively, I want to get better at finishing around the rim, especially through contact.
Q: What was your favorite road trip from last season and why?Â
A: A lot of the team would say Hawaii, but for me, it was the trip to the Washington schools. A lot of my family is from there, I am from there, and all of my friends are from Washington. When we played at UW, every single person I knew came to watch and it was so packed and so loud, it felt like a home game. It was one of the most amazing and yet humbling experiences to ever happen to me and I am never going to forget that road trip. Oh yeah, we pulled two W's out of that trip as well.
Q: What did it mean to you to break the freshman record at Utah and lead the Pac-12 for threes made in a season?
A: It is never about personal awards or records for me. But, what I will brag about is the fact that our team set a school record for the year in overall threes made in a season and that is awesome. We've got some certified shooters on this team.
Q: What was it like getting to bring back two wins after playing in front of your hometown crowd in Washington last season?
A: We wear monitors during games that track our heart rate and our strength trainer said he could tell the exact moment when my friends and family arrived at the game because my heart rate spiked and increased so fast. The atmosphere was electric. It's probably going down as one of the most special moments in my life. I think about that weekend a lot.
Q: How would you describe your style of play in just three words?Â
A: Tenacious, joyful, over-the-top-competitive.
Q: Who is your favorite professional basketball player and why?
A: My favorite current basketball player is CJ McCollum for the Portland Trailblazers. I have always been a huge Blazers fan. His footwork is insane and I love him because even though he isn't the quickest or strongest guy out there, he still finds ways to score and I try and model my game after his.
Q: What has been your favorite part about living in Utah?
A: The views. They are incredible. Everywhere you turn you are surrounded by mountains. And when the sun sets, the scenery is even more beautiful.
Q: What do you plan to study at the U. and why?
A: I am currently studying communications with an emphasis in journalism. I have always loved to write and I think being a sports broadcaster, specifically for basketball, would be really fun. I want to know what it is like on the other side of the camera.
Q: What is your dream job after graduating from the U. and why?
A: When I was in third grade, I had the opportunity to watch the Seattle Storm play for the first time and I got to meet Sue Bird. Ever since then, my dream has been to play in the WNBA. I love basketball more that anyone I know and I want to play it as long as I can.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing at the U. so far?
A: It would be the people for sure. I have the best teammates and I love all of them. The staff and coaches here are amazing as well. I could not ask for better people around me.Â
