Sophomore Kemery Martín is ready to take her sophomore season head on after a successful freshman campaign in 2019-20. She played in all 31 games as a true freshman last season, starting nine, while averaging 13.9 minutes, 1.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 4.3 points per game. She reached double-digits in four games, leading the team in scoring in three of those games against Top 10 teams.
UtahUtes.com chatted with Martín about her first season on the court with the Utes, what her favorite road trip was and what she is looking to improve on during the 2020-21 season.
Q: What was your experience like getting to play in the Pac-12 as a freshman?
A: It was super competitive and fun. It is for sure is the best conference in the country.
Q: What was your favorite game from last season and why?
A: Probably the game against Oregon in the Pac-12 Tournament because we stuck with them for most of the game and our team played really well. Even though we lost, the atmosphere was unreal.
Q: What is something you want to improve on this next season?
A: Taking my game to the next level, that's the goal every year.
Q: What was your favorite road trip from last season and why?
A: I enjoyed our last go around to California because I enjoy California and after we finished up some games we got to spend time in Oxnard as a team and we had a lot of fun.
Q: How do you feel you've grown on and off the court after your freshman year?
A: For sure, this past year I learned a lot and for me I'm really soaking everything up and putting it into my preparation for the next season.
Q: How do you juggle school and being a Division I athlete?
A: It really helps when you are organized and stay on top of things. No matter how tired I am, I make sure I get my responsibilities done each day.
Q: How would you describe your style of play in just three words?
A: Creative, smooth, nice.
Q: Who is your favorite professional basketball player and why?
A: I like watching Kyrie Irving, I really like his style of play.
Q: What has been your favorite part about growing up and living in Utah?
A: It hard to choose just a part, but family means a lot to me and fortunately most of my family lives in Utah or close to Utah so that has been huge for me.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing at the U. so far?
A: All of the people I get to see and hang out with everyday.
