Utah women’s basketball head coach Lynne Roberts and her staff have continued to bring in top talent to the program during her five seasons at the helm with that fact becoming even more evident last season as the underclassmen accounted for over 74-percent of the team’s scoring.
A large part of that scoring surge came from a trio of athletes that are heading into their sophomore seasons at the U., adding in a transfer with high caliber Division I and international experience on her resume. Utah’s freshmen class from 2019-20 helped break school records, freshmen records and were a part of Roberts’ first win at the Pac-12 Tournament.
The four sophomores bring quick shooting, range, size and experience to Utah’s 2020-21 roster at a young age with Brynna Maxwell, Lola Pendande and Kemery Martín returning for their second year with the program. The Utes added Isabel Palmer this summer, a transfer from Texas who has had success in international basketball as well, playing for the Australian National Team at the U17 FIBA World Cup.

Quick Hits on Utah’s Super Sophomores
1 :: Isabel Palmer :: Newcastle, Australia (Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence)
Transferred to Utah after her freshman season at the University of Texas (2019-20) … played in 27 games for the Longhorns and was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll … scored a career-high 15 points that included three made baskets from beyond the arc against UTRGV last season … two-time New South Wales Female Player of the Year in Australia … team captain for the U17 Australia World Cup team in 2018, leading them to a bronze medal finish.
Why Utah : “I was drawn to the U. because of the diversity of players within the team. To have other people going through what you’re going through as an international student-athlete away from home is valuable because you have shared experiences that only make your team more cohesive.”
How Isabel Describes Her Style of Play: Fast-paced, aggressive, energetic.
Even in the limited time that we have gotten to see her play in person, she is already breaking shooting records in our shooting drills. She can really shoot it with accuracy and that is exciting. She is a point guard at heart with the capacity to lead the team. Coming in as a transfer, you come in with more experience. She is vocal, she can lead and is encouraging to the team. I think she is going to be an impact player for us.Lynne Roberts

11 :: Brynna Maxwell :: Gig Harbor, Wash. (Gig Harbor HS)
First freshman for the Utes since joining the Pac-12 to earn Pac-12 All-Conference honors (honorable mention) … also earned first-team Pac-12 All-Freshman … led the Pac-12 and set the Utah freshman record for threes made in a season (83), which also ranks fifth all-time in program history overall … ended the year ranked fourth in the country in three-point percentage (.472) … reached double-digits in 21 games, starting in all 31 while averaging 13.1 points per game … five 20-point outings, hitting a combined 24 threes in those games.
Favorite Road Trip: “It was the trip to the Washington schools. A lot of my family is from there, I am from there, and all of my friends are from Washington. It was one of the most amazing and yet humbling experiences to ever happen to me and I am never going to forget that road trip.”
How Brynna Describes Her Style of Play: Tenacious, joyful, over-the-top-competitive.
There are a lot of kids that can shoot and make shots, but what separates her is her competitiveness. She is a winner. Whether it is a drill or a competition in practice, she rises to the occasion. If you tell her to go out and shoot 100 shots, but then tell her to make 90, a switch comes on for her. Her work ethic is incredible. She is going to be one of the best players in the league.Lynne Roberts

Earned Pac-12 All-Freshman honorable mention last season after seeing action in all 31 games, starting 29 … averaged 23.4 minutes, 10.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game … scored in double-digits in 15 games and led the Utes in rebounding in 16 … 23 games with five or more rebounds … led the team in double-doubles with three … ranked seventh in the Pac-12 in total blocks (34) and was fifth in blocks per game (1.1) … shot 50-percent or higher in 24 games.
What Lola Studies: "I am studying politics because I love to learn about it and know different ways of how the system works. I will probably end up in law school and that is all because I want to help people with anything they need.”
How Lola Describes Her Style of Play: Aggressive, tough, passionate.
Lola has the potential to be one of the best players in the league. She had an up and down year last year and admitted she could have worked harder, so she is really doing a nice job of changing her approach in terms of consistency. I am looking forward to seeing that translate into games because she is such a talent and I know she is 100-percent bought in here.Lynne Roberts

“All the hours, days & months of training have their reward. Not many have the privilege of playing for Spain & showing the world how hard we work to get those medals.. It is an honor.”

15 :: Kemery Martín :: Sandy, Utah (Corner Canyon HS)
Played in all 31 games as a true freshman last season, starting in nine … averaged 13.9 minutes, 1.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 4.3 points per game … reached double-digits in four games, leading the team in points in three of those, all against Top 10 teams … scored a career-high 15 points twice, against Oregon and Stanford … was a five-star recruit on ESPN.com out of high school, earning Gatorade Player of the Year and Ms. Basketball for the state of Utah.
Favorite Game From Last Season: “Probably the game against Oregon in the Pac-12 Tournament because we stuck with them for most of the game and our team played really well. Even though we lost, the atmosphere was unreal.”
How Kemery Describes Her Style of Play: Creative, smooth, nice.
Kemery has had the most impressive offseason with our group. The summer between your freshman and sophomore year is the most critical in terms of predicting their trajectory. She is stronger, she is bigger and she is more confident. Last year was challenging for her, but she just looks like a different player now. She looks sure of herself, healthy and confident, which is exciting because she is a talent.Lynne Roberts
Kem’s always smooth with it. ??
