SALT LAKE CITY – Utah junior forward
Alissa Pili today was named to the Midseason Top 25 Watch List for the John R. Wooden Award, which recognizes the outstanding player in college basketball. Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on performance during the 2022-23 season thus far, the list was revealed live on ESPN2 on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Pili is one of four players from Pac-12 schools on the list, joined by Stanford's Cameron Brink and Haley Jones, and UCLA's Charisma Osborne. The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2023 John R. Wooden Award Women's Player of the Year presented by Wendy's.
Â
Pili is the leading scorer for the Utes, who are one of five remaining undefeated teams in the nation, at 14-0, and are ranked No. 8 in this week's AP poll, Utah's highest ranking in program history. Pili is the third-leading scorer in the Pac-12, at 19.7 points per game, and ranks 23rd nationally. Her shooting percentage of 63.7-percent leads the Pac-12 and ranks 11th nationally.
Â
The junior from Anchorage, Alaska (Dimond High School) had a streak of scoring 20 or more points in four consecutive games in December, and has seven total on the season. She scored 25 or more points in three consecutive games (28, 28, 25) from Dec. 1-14, the first Ute to do so since 2009-10. Her back-to-back 28-point games in early December were the first consecutive games of 28 or more points by a Utah player since 2014, and she was the first Ute to do so in two road games since at least 1999-2000.
Â
Pili recently topped the 1,000-career-point mark, bringing 795 points from USC (2019-22) before her transfer to Utah prior to the 2022-23 season.
Â
Utah, 3-0 in the Pac-12 for the first time since joining the conference in 2011-12, takes on the University of Colorado in Boulder on Friday, Jan. 6. The Utes are the nation's third-highest-scoring team, averagingÂÂ 88.7 points per game, and rank second in field-goal percentage (50.9), third in scoring margin (+30.6) and fourth in assists (20.1).
