EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 16 Utah Utes took down the Oregon Ducks 58-48 to earn Utah Women's Basketball their 1,000th program win.
Utah trailed by double digits early in the first half but put together a 12-0 run in the third quarter to take the lead for the first time in the game. Utah never let up after the third quarter momentum shift and pulled ahead for the victory. Utah was led by Pili's 16 points, all of which she scored in the second half.
Utah is now 15-5 overall on the season and 5-3 in Pac-12 play.
GAME SUMMARY Oregon started the game on an 8-0 run leaving the Utes scoreless for the first four minutes of the game. Kennady McQueen made a layup in the paint to end the drought and put Utah on the board. Matyson Wilke came in off the bench sparking some momentum for the Utes as she scored five consecutive points with a jumper just outside the key and a three ball. Utah ended the quarter trailing 13-7.
The Ducks started the second quarter in similar fashion to the first with an 8-0 run to push out for a 14 point lead. Wilke hit her second three to end the drought but Utah still had some work to do. The Utes were able to bring the score deficit back to single digits but trailed 29-21 at the half.
With ground to recover, Utah started the second half with a made three pointer from Dasia Young. Thanks to strong defensive efforts, Utah captured the momentum going on a 12-0 run to take a 41-33 lead with just under three minutes left in the third quarter. Utah out scored Oregon 22-7 in the third quarter to capture a 43-36 lead going into the final quarter of play.
Utah pushed out for a nine point lead early in the fourth quarter but the Ducks made a little surge to bring the score back within three. Alissa Pili hit back-to-back jumpers in the paint to give the Utes their edge back. With Pili's efforts, Utah went on a 7-0 run to end the game to claim the 58-48 win.
LEADERS Utah had three Utes score in double figures and were led by Pili's 16 points. Wilke came off the bench to drop 11 points including three made from beyond the arc.
Jenna Johnson had her second double-double on the year with 10 points and a game high 10 rebounds.
Ines Vieira ended the game with a career-high seven steals. She also had the game high of five assists.
COMPARISON Utah ended the game shooting 35 percent from the field while Oregon shot 34 percent. Utah knocked down eight from beyond the arc for 26.7 percent while Oregon hit just four from deep for 28.6 percent. The Ducks and Utes both shot 75 percent from the free throw line.
Utah barely out rebounded Oregon 38-36. The Utes also dropped 16 assists to the Ducks eight. Utah forced 15 Oregon turnovers and converted that to 11 points. The Utes had just nine turnovers. NOTABLES Utah has recorded 15 wins this season to give them 1,000 program wins. Utah is currently on a four-game win streak.
Vieira's seven steals marks a career-high which was previously six steals set in the season opener against Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 6.
UP NEXT Utah has three more games on the road starting at Oregon State Jan. 28. The Utes will then head to Washington Feb. 2 and Washington State Feb. 4. Utah will next return to the Huntsman Center to host Oregon State Feb. 9 and Oregon Feb. 11.
