The Utes are coming off a 23-11 overall record in 2023-24
Utah has posted a 23-10 record overall on the season and finished with an 11-7 record in the Pac-12. This will be the 17th match up with SUU and Utah. Utah holds a 15-1 overall record over the Thunderbirds.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah fell 77-66 to Gonzaga in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. This was Utah's third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Second Round. In the First Round of the tournament Utah picked up a 68-54 win over No. 12 seeded South Dakota State.
THE UTES
Utah returned four starters from last year's squad including 2022-23 All-American
Gianna Kneepkens. Kneepekens returns after suffering a season ending injury early in the season. Utah also brought back starters,
Jenna Johnson,
Kennady McQueen and
Inês Vieira. Other key players returning are
Matyson Wilke,
Samantha Crispe,
Reese Ross. The Utes welcome two transfers in
Chyra Evans and
Mayé Touré and three true freshmen in
Grace Foster,
Kylie Ray and
Brooke Walker.
KNOWING KNEEPKENS
Prior to her injury in 2023-24, Kneepkens was averaging 17.8 points per game while shooting 63.3 percent from the field and 54.0 percent from beyond the arc. She averaged 5.5 rebounds and four assists per game.
Kneepkens knocked down three or more three-pointers in all but one game last season with a season-high of five made against Eastern Kentucky (Nov. 19, 2023). She broke into the 1,000-point club when she put up 19 against Carroll College (Nov. 28, 2023).
She averages 14 points per game throughout her career and has career shooting averages of 49.1 percent from the field, 42.3 percent from the three and 84.1 percent from the line. She has 154 total made three pointers and is just five shy from breaking into Utah's top 10 all-time threes made list.
She was named to both the Naismith Player of the Year and Cheryl Miller Award Preseason Watchlists. Kneepkens was also placed on the Big 12 Preseason All-Conference team.
IN THE RANKS
Utah received votes in the AP Top 25 Preseason Polls and was ranked in the Top 25 for 20 consecutive weeks during the 2023-24 season.
HEAD COACH LYNNE ROBERTS
Roberts is in her 10th season at the helm of the Utes. She has posted a 162-115 record in her time at Utah. She was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2023 after leading the team to its first ever Pac-12 regular season title. She led Utah to its second ever Sweet 16 appearance in 2022-23. Roberts also led the Utes to its highest AP Rankings in school history, including 12 weeks in the Top 10 during the 2022-23 season.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN UTAH
The Southern Utah Thunderbirds are also kicking off their season with this match up. The T-Birds are coming off an 8-22 record in the 2023-24 season. SUU ended the season with a 67-33 loss to UT Arlington in the WAC Tournament at the end of 2023-24.
Utah has a 15-1 record with SUU. Utah has an 11-1 record with the T-Birds in Salt Lake City. The last time the two teams met up was last season when Utah picked up a 90-66 win in Cedar City.
SUU is led by head coach Tracy Mason who is in her seventh season. She has an 86-89 record at the helm of the Thunderbirds.
