EVANSTON, Ill. – The first road trip of the season didn't end in favor of the Utah Women's Basketball team as it fell to Northwestern, 71-69.
GAME SUMMARY
Northwestern got on the board first with back-to-back layups. Utah then answered with a made driving layup by Gianna Kneepkens. Mayé Touré then launched one from deep, sinking it to give Utah the lead. Later in the first, the Utes put together a 7-0 run to give them a six point edge over the Wildcats.
Going into the second quarter, Utah maintained for a 16-12 lead over Northwestern. Utah's defense locked in and held Northwestern to a three minute scoring drought to end the first half, while the Utes' offense went on a 6-0 run that propelled them to a 37-27 lead over Northwestern going into halftime.
Northwestern captured the momentum in the third quarter stringing together a 13-3 run to cut the score deficit down to just two. However, Jenna Johnson ignited in the third quarter, putting up 11 points to keep the score in favor of Utah, 54-52 going into the final quarter of play.
The Wildcats tied the game up at 54-54 with nine minutes remaining in the game thanks to a pair of Wildcat free throws. Shortly after that, the fire alarm blasted throughout the arena forcing both teams into a 10-minute intermission. No evacuation was necessary and the game resumed with 8:32 remaining on the clock.
The two teams went back and forth until Northwestern edged past the Utes taking a five point lead with one minute left. Utah was able to cut the lead to just three points thanks to a backdoor cut from Reese Ross who laid it up and in. With 8.3 seconds on the clock, Kneepkens sunk three free throws to tie the game 69-69, but Northwestern was able to make a layup with three seconds left to squeak out a 71-69 win over Utah.
LEADERS
Utah had three Utes score in double figures and were led by Johnson's first double-double on the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ross and Kneepkens each added 14 points for the Utes.
COMPARISON
Utah ended the game shooting 33.8-percent from the field while Northwestern shot 50.9-percent. Utah knocked down nine from beyond the arc for 27.3-percent while the Wildcats hit just two from deep for-20.0 percent. Utah also shot 62.5-percent from the free throw line going 16-of-26 while Northwestern shot 92.9-percent going 13-of-14.
Utah had 16 turnovers and forced Northwestern into 21. The Utes narrowly out rebounded the Wildcats 37-34. Utah also had 15 assists to Northwestern's 22.
