GEORGE TOWN, CAYMAN ISLANDS — It
was a tale of two halves for the Utah women's basketball team as the Utes battled back from a 24 point deficit in the 66-62 loss to Mississippi State in the first game of the Cayman Islands Classic.
Utah went on a 35-10 scoring run that started in the third quarter and went all the way into the final minutes of the game. The momentum shift for the Utes cut a 24-point scoring deficit down to just two points with two minutes remaining in the game. Utah was able to take a one point lead but weren't able to capitalize and fell 66-62 to Mississippi State.
GAME SUMMARY
Utah started the game out on a 5-0 run but Mississippi State quickly answered and took control of the quarter with the help of a 9-0 run. The Bulldogs captured all the momentum later with an 11-1 run that propelled them to a 26-11 lead over the Utes at the end of the first quarter.
Mississippi State continued to charge in the second quarter while Utah couldn't gain any footing. The Bulldogs sent the Utes into halftime trailing 43-22.
Utah gained their footing in the second half resulting in a huge momentum shift. A made layup by Jenna Johnson at 7:01 in the third quarter ignited a 35-10 scoring run in favor of the Utes that ran deep into the fourth quarter.
In the midst of Utah's offensive surge, an 8-0 run by the Utes and a technical foul on Mississippi State early in the fourth quarter contributed to Utah's comeback. The Utes went on to cut the score deficit to just six points with 4:29 to play thanks to a turnaround jumper in the paint by Johnson.
A pair of made free throws by Gianna Kneepkens with 2:05 remaining in the game brought the score to 59-57. Utah's defense then locked in for a stop that led to a made three ball by Kennady McQueen with just 1:23 left on the clock to give Utah the lead for the first time since the initial minute of the game.
Utah stayed close and battled in the final minutes but Mississippi State pulled away for the 66-62 victory over Utah.
LEADERS
Utah had two players score in double figures and were led by Gianna Kneepkens' 17 points. Kneepkens went just 3-of-10 from the field including two made from three point range. However, Kneepkens really shined from the free throw line knocking down 9-of-9. Jenna Johnson also had a big game for Utah with 13 points.
Kennady McQueen was just shy of double figures with nine points, all coming from three-point range.
Reese Ross jumped out of the gym for the Utes pulling down the game high of six rebounds for Utah. Inês Vieira helped Utah with her five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
COMPARISON
Utah shot 36.4 percent from the court while Mississippi State shot 46.2 percent. Utah went 25.0 percent from deep making 8-of-32 while MSU went 36.8 percent shooting 7-of-19. The Utes shot for 77.8 percent from the free throw line going 14-of-18 while the Bulldogs shot for 68.8 percent going 11-of-16 from the line.
Utah had 12 assists on 20 made field goals while Mississippi State had 18 assists on 24 made field goals. Mississippi State had a strong night on the boards pulling down 28 to Utah's 29.
NOTABLES
Utah is now 5-2 overall on the season.
Jenna Johnson's two rebounds puts her at exactly 500 career rebounds.
Kennady McQueen's three made from beyond the arc puts her at 222 career made three pointers which is No. 3 on Utah's all-time made three pointers list.
Gianna Kneepkens has posted double figure scoring in every game so far this season.
