TUCSON, Ariz. – The Utah women's basketball team picked up its first win at the McKale Memorial Center in Tucson, Ariz. since 2018 as Utah downed Arizona 69-48 Tuesday afternoon.
Utah was led by Gianna Kneepkens' 18 points. Reese Ross led Utah on the boards pulling down a season high of 11. Inês Vieira helped the Utes to victory with 11 assists.
GAME SUMMARY
The Utes started the game on a 6-0 run. In the final 90 seconds of the first quarter, Gianna Kneepkens knocked down a three and Matyson Wilke followed en suite with a made three on the next possession to give Utah a 16-9 lead at the end of the initial quarter of play.
Arizona went on an early 6-0 run in the second quarter to chip away at the score deficit. Utah quickly answered with an 8-0 scoring run that was sparked by a pair of Reese Ross free throws. Kennady McQueen and Kneepkens each hit one from deep to add to the Utes scoring run.
The Utes held Arizona to just one made field goal in the final four minutes of play in the second quarter that helped Utah to a 31-19 lead going into the halftime break.
Kneepkens started the second half with five points in two possessions for the Utes. Utah also locked in on defense and held Arizona scoreless for eight minutes of the third quarter. Arizona found some momentum by hitting three consecutive from deep. Utah ended the third quarter with a made three from McQueen to give Utah a 45-28 lead going into the final quarter of play.
Utah continued to control the game through the fourth quarter and captured the 69-48 win over Arizona for the first time since 2018.
LEADERS
Utah had three players score in double figures and were led by Gianna Kneepkens' 18 points. She went 6-of-9 from the field including four made from deep. She also added nine rebounds. Kennady McQueen also hit double figures with 11 points while Mayé Touré added 10.
Reese Ross had a season-high 11 rebounds while Inês Vieira had 11 assists for a season-high.
COMPARISON
Utah shot 52.2 percent from the field while Arizona shot 34.5 percent from the field. Utah went 39.1 percent from deep making 9-of-23 while Arizona went 36.8percent shooting 7-of-19. The Utes went 12-of-16 from the free throw line for 75.0 percent while the Wildcats went 1-of-4 for 25.0 percent.
Utah had 19 assists on 24 made field goals while Arizona had eight assists on 20 made field goals. Utah dominated the boards with 40 rebounds while Arizona had 22.
The Utes were a force around the rim with 28 points coming from within the pain while the Wildcats had 16 points in the paint.
NOTABLES
Utah is now 11-2 overall on the season and 2-0 in Big 12 play.
The Utes picked up their first win in Tucson, Arizona since the 2017-18 seasons when Utah defeated Arizona 80-56.
The last time a Ute had double figure assists was just last season when Inês Vieira set a career high of 14 against Alaska Anchorage (11/18/23).
