LA JOLLA, Calif. – It took 11 innings, but the Utah Baseball team powered through to take a 4-3 victory over UC San Diego on Friday night at Triton Ballpark, in the Utes' first game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy series.
The Utes are now 4-1 on the season, winning four straight after the ballclub dropped its season-opener.
Small ball was key for the Utes in the final frame, with two bunt attempts by
Cameron Gurney and
Michael Davinni instrumental in bringing
Tyler Quinn home with what proved to be the game-winning run. Quinn walked with one out, headed toward second on Gurney's bunt and took third as a result of a Tritons error on the play. Then, Davinni laid down a squeeze on the 1-1 pitch as Quinn slid safely across home plate.
Lefty
Micah Ashman took over on the mound for the bottom of the 11
th and retired the Tritons 1-2-3, including a strikeout to wrap up Ashman's first save of the season. The Preseason All-American and NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List member now has 10 saves in his career, the fifth-most by a Ute in recorded program history.
Center fielder
Kai Roberts was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, extending Roberts' hitting streak to four straight games. Leadoff man and shortstop
Core Jackson doubled and scored in the game, hitting safely for the third straight contest.
Five different Utes contributed on the mound, with freshman
Colter McAnelly (1-0) earning his first collegiate win.
Merit Jones went 4.2 innings in his start with five strikeouts, being relieved by
Randon Hostert for four innings. Then in extras,
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola, McAnelly and Ashman helped hold off UC San Diego.
Utah worked quickly to plate two runs in its first turn at bat. Jackson led off the game going opposite field for a double, then scored when Roberts laid down a bunt with the intent of sacrificing Jackson over to third. Roberts, who hustled down the line toward first base, beat out what became an errant throw that allowed Jackson to score.
Roberts would steal second and score two batters later on Quinn's sac fly to give Utah the early 2-0 lead after just half an inning.
Then in the second, Utah tacked on another run. Davinni led off with a base hit, reached third on a walk and bunt single, then scored when
Bruer Webster laid one down in front of the mound but the throw home got away.
UC San Diego would claw back to a 3-2 score, getting on the board during the third inning with an RBI double and cutting the margin to one with a single up the middle in the fifth frame. The Utes then called on Hostert from the bullpen and he induced a ground ball for a fielder's choice to end the fifth.
Hostert and the Utes kept their poise in the seventh to maintain the 3-2 lead. After the Tritons doubled to lead off the inning and moved the tying run to third on a sac bunt, Hostert responded with a strikeout looking and induced a fly ball to get out of the jam.
Then in the bottom of the eighth, UC San Diego hit another leadoff double and loaded the bases with nobody out after a walk, bunt and a Utah error. The Tritons would tie the score at three on a sacrifice fly, but Hostert and the Utah defense prevented any further damage with two groundouts to end the inning.
Utah looked to have a chance at breaking the tie in the 10
th when Webster reached on a push bunt that slowly rolled down the third base line before coming to rest in fair territory. He stole second base but was stranded there.
Lugo-Canchola struck out the leadoff man in the Tritons' half of the 10
th, before being relieved by McAnelly who went two up, two down.
The Utes are right back at it on Saturday as the team takes on Loyola Marymount in the Tony Gwynn Legacy series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. MT as action shifts to Tony Gwynn Stadium on the campus of San Diego State.
