PULLMAN, Wash. –The No. 20 Utah Utes downed the Washington State Cougars Sunday afternoon with a 73-61 win.
Utah pushed out for a double-digit lead early in the second quarter but WSU surged for an even 34-34 tied score at halftime. Utah found consistency in the second half to push out for the 73-61 win.
Utah is now 17-6 overall on the season and 7-4 in Pac-12 play.
GAME SUMMARY Ines Vieira started the game off with a made three ball for the Utes. Utah went on to make three more from beyond the arc for four made in the first quarter. Utah's hot shooting helped the Utes to an 18-14 lead going into the second quarter of play.
The Utes went on a 9-0 run early in the second quarter holding the Cougars to a four minute scoring drought. Washington State answered with a 15-3 run and cut the score deficit down from 13 down to one. Pili was able to work in the paint to score two for Utah. With time one second on the clock, Washington State sent a shot soaring from past half court that sunk to tie the game 34-34 at half time.
Kennady McQueen hit a step back three to spark an 8-0 run for the Utes early in the third quarter. Washington State found some momentum and took a one point lead with just over two minutes left in the quarter. The Utes put together a 6-0 run to forge ahead for a 55-52 lead over the Cougars at the end of the third quarter.
The final quarter of play started with Isabel Palmer splitting two defenders for reverse layup. Utah wasn't deterred despite a quick answer from WSU and the Utes went on a 7-0 run. Later in the fourth quarter, Utah pushed out for an 11-point lead. The Utes held the Cougars to just nine points in the fourth quarter and pulled out the 73-61 win over the Cougars.
LEADERS Utah had five Utes score in double figures and were led by Pili's 15 points. Palmer posted 14 points while McQueen and Johnson each had 13. Vieira was the final Ute to post double figures with an even 10.
Johnson led Utah with eight rebounds and Pili was close behind pulling down seven. McQueen led the Utes with four assists.
COMPARISON Utah ended the game shooting 51.9 percent from the field while Washington State shot 46.9 percent. Utah knocked down 13 from beyond the arc for 46.4 percent while WSU hit seven from deep for 43.8 percent. The Cougars shot 80.0 percent from the line while the Utes shot 57.1 percent. Rebounding efforts were nearly equal between the two teams with WSU having a 28-27 edge over Utah.
Utah dominated in the paint posting 30 points while Washington State only had 22. Utah capitalized on WSU's 16 turnovers converting that to 25 points.
