The Utes earned a third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth for the second time in school history, and the first time since going to three in a row from 1989-91. Utah's No. 5 seed marks the fifth time the Utes have earned that seeding and is the second-highest seed for the program. Utah's highest seed, No. 2, came last year when the Utes advanced to their third Sweet Sixteen.Â

"I think these first two rounds are going to be competitive," remarked head coach Lynne Roberts. "Gonzaga is a great environment. They are basketball fans in Spokane. South Dakota State is good. They are always really tough. We'll have our hands full. Our team has dug deep this year. They are not going to give in. We have the talent it takes and they have fortitude and competitiveness. I'm so proud of how they stuck together and stayed motivated this year. It's nice to have three years in the NCAA Tournament under our belt for a lot of our players. It eliminates some nerves and anxiousness and it's a big moment. It's something these kids have dreamed about for most of their lives."
This will be the Utes' 20th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament and third under Roberts. In 2022-23, the second seeded Utes hosted the first and second rounds and advanced to the Sweet 16 in Greenville S.C. The highest the University of Utah had been seeded in the NCAA Tournament prior to last year was No. 5 and it happened in 1982-83, 1996-97, 2000-01, 2005-06.Â
Â
The Utes earned this year's bid after collecting their 32nd, 20-win season in program history after finishing the season 22-10. Utah finished the regular season at No. 20 in the AP Top 25 Poll and ended the season at No. 11 in the NET rankings after spending the entire year in the top 10.Â
South Dakota State finished first in the Summit League with a 27-5 overall record and went a perfect 16-0 in conference action. This will be the fourth overall meeting between the Utes and the Jackrabbits. Utah has a 2-1 record with SDSU. The last time the two teams met up was in Dec. 2009 where Utah picked up a 62-58 win.Â
