SPOKANE, Wash. – The No. 5 seeded Utah Utes battled with the No. 4 seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament before falling 77-66 to the host Bulldogs at the McCarthey Athletic Center, bringing the Utes' season to a close. Utah showed incredible fortitude in a hostile environment, battling back from a 21-point deficit to pull within six points with 4:41 to play. Alissa Pili led the way with 35 points in the game, but it was ultimately not enough to overcome the host Bulldogs. Utah reached new heights as a program this season by winning at least one game in the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season under head coach Lynne Roberts.
GAME SUMMARY The Utes started the game strong with an early 7-0 run in the first quarter. It didn't take long for Gonzaga to answer with an 8-0 run, forcing the Utes into a three-minute scoring drought. Kennady McQueen broke the drought with a driving layup and followed that up with a made stepback three. McQueen's five points sparked a 13-3 run for the Utes that propelled them to a 23-17 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was a different story, as the Bulldogs stole the momentum and outscored the Utes 24-8, extending a stretch in which it made nine of it three-point attempts in a row. Utah had some ground to make up going into the second half, trailing 41-31 at the break.
Gonzaga started the second half on an 11-0 run that pushed its lead to 21 over the Utes. Utah endured a three-minute scoring drought that was broken by an Alissa Pili three-pointer. Utah was able to force Gonzaga into a three-minute scoring drought that the Utes capitalized on with a 10-0 run to cut into the lead, but Utah still trailed 62-48 going into the final quarter of play.
The Utes started picking up momentum in the fourth quarter putting together a 9-0 run to cut the score deficit into single digits for the first time in the second half. The only points the Bulldogs scored over the course of a seven-minute period came from the free-throw line, but Gonzaga ultimately put an end to the Utes' comeback effort.
LEADERS Three Utah players scored in double figures, led by Pili's 35 points. Dasia Young was a big threat for the Utes tonight with 11 points, while Kennady McQueen added 12.
Pili led Utah on the boards with seven on the night while, McQueen wasn't far behind with six. Ines Vieira added six assists to Utah's offensive efforts and added three steals at the defensive end. Despite Utah's fourth-quarter tenacity, Gonzaga walked away with a 77-66 win over the Utes to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.
COMPARISON Utah ended the game shooting 38.1 percent from the field, while Gonzaga shot 48.0. Utah knocked down nine from beyond the arc for 26.5 percent while the Bulldogs hit 12 from deep for 54.5 percent. Utah shot a perfect 100 percent from the free throw line, going 9-9, while GU shot 77.3 percent.
Both teams had 11 turnovers. Gonzaga edged past Utah on the boards, pulling down 37 to Utah's 31. Both teams ended the game with 16 assists.
NOTABLES Utah now has a 12-20 record in the NCAA Tournament.
Utah's 16 assists on the night brought its season total 660, breaking the school single-season assists record.
Utah now has a 5-5 overall record against Gonzaga. This was the first meeting with the two teams in the NCAA Tournament.
