SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Baseball team held off a ninth-inning rally by Stanford as the Utes hung on for a 7-5 win on Friday afternoon at Smith's Ballpark. It's the Utes' third straight win, seventh in the last eight games and ensures the team's first series win over Stanford since 2016.
Utah is now 18-7 on the season and 7-4 in Pac-12 Conference play.
Stanford pushed two runs across with two outs in the ninth inning, after which head coach
Gary Henderson made a call to the bullpen and brought on lefty
Micah Ashman. The NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List member and No. 22-ranked relief pitcher by D1Baseball.com struck out the only batter he faced, earning his Pac-12-leading eighth save of the season and 17
th career save. The latter ties Ashman for the program record at Utah alongside Tyler Wagner, who pitched for the ballclub from 2010-12.
Jaden Harris picked up the win (4-0) with two innings of two-hit, shutout relief before exiting the game.
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola then worked 1.2 innings before handing off to Ashman for the save.
At the plate,
Hunter Antillon clubbed his first home run as a Ute as part of a 2-for-4 day with three RBI.
Core Jackson and
Kai Roberts each had two hits as well, while Jackson scored three runs and Digiorno came in twice in the ballgame.
Roberts doubled for his 11
th two-bagger of the season, which leads the conference. He has hit safely in seven of his last eight games.
Starting pitcher
Bryson Van Sickle was faced with a tough situation early in the game, as Stanford loaded the bases in the first inning with nobody out. The southpaw fought to keep the Cardinal off the scoreboard, striking out the next batter and inducing an inning-ending double-play.
The Utes grabbed a quick lead in the bottom half of the first inning as Jackson led off with a single to left center and Roberts followed by earning a walk. Both runners advanced a base after Digiorno put down a sacrifice bunt and
TJ Clarkson loaded the bases with another walk. With
Kaden Carpenter in the box, Jackson raced home and scored the game's first run on a wild pitch.
Stanford worked a one-out walk in the third inning but Van Sickle continued to shine, putting up another scoreless frame. Jackson led off the third for Utah with a walk and advanced to third after a pair of wild pitches. Roberts followed with an RBI groundout to extend Utah's lead to 2-0.
Utah grabbed another run in the fourth after Antillon crushed a solo shot onto the left field berm, giving the club a 3-0 lead. After a groundout, Jackson hustled to acquire his second hit of the game with a grounder to shortstop but was stranded on second.
Van Sickle started the fifth inning with his third strikeout and quickly retired the next Stanford batter. After the Cardinal hit a two-out double and a hit-by-pitch, Van Sickle was relieved by
Jackson Elder and the junior forced a fielder's choice to retire the side.
Digorno started the bottom of the fifth with a walk and stole second with one out. The Utes loaded the bases after another duo of walks with two outs, then Antillon singled up the middle to drive in both Carpenter and Digiorno for a 5-0 lead.
The Cardinal plated their first runs of the afternoon after stringing three consecutive singles to start the sixth, scoring a run and placing runners on the corners. Harris entered in relief and induced a sacrifice fly before an RBI single cut the Utes' lead to 5-3. A batter's interference call on Stanford and a phenomenal leaping grab from Jackson at shortstop ended the threat.
The Utah bats stayed hot in the sixth as Jackson led off with a walk, Roberts singled up the middle, and Digiorno walked to load the bases. Clarkson followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, but the Utes ran into some trouble on the base paths as Roberts was out trying to advance to third. After another walk, pinch hitter
Michael Davinni singled through the right side, bringing in Digiorno with his third run scored.
In the seventh, Harris worked around a one-out single with a little help from his defense as Antillon threw out a Cardinal trying to take second base. Harris finished the inning with a strikeout.
A two-out rally for the Cardinal made things interesting in the ninth. After a single for Stanford and a wild pitch, an error by the Utes allowed the inning to continue with runners at the corners. Jake Sapien then used a two-run double to plate a pair of unearned runs as the score now moved to 7-5.
Ashman then came on and struck out Charlie Saum to close out the victory.
