The First Pitch: Things to Know
The first midweek matchup of the season awaits the Utah Baseball team as the Utes take on Santa Clara on Tuesday night at Stephen Schott Stadium. It's the middle stop of the Utes' Spring Break trip; the team took two of three at Cal Poly over the weekend and will begin the Pac-12 Conference schedule this weekend at Washington State.
- This is Utah's first trip to Santa Clara since the 2018 season; the Utes were swept in a three-game series. In the series finale, Utah led 4-1 at seventh inning stretch and pulled ahead 5-4 in the 12th inning, but the Broncos would ultimately walk off for the extra-innings win.
- The Utes enter Tuesday's game winners in nine of their last 10, looking to get back on track after a 4-3 setback to Cal Poly on Sunday in the nightcap of a doubleheader. It snapped the club's nine-game winning streak, the longest in the Pac-12 at the time and the longest for Utah since the 1997 season.
- After three weekends, the Utes' pitching staff has shown incredible progress from a year ago. The group's 2.93 earned run average leads the Pac-12 and ranks ninth nationally. On the mound, Utah is also averaging 7.46 hits allowed per nine innings; it's third-best in the league and checks in at 37th in the country.
- Randon Hostert has led the charge out of the bullpen with three appearances and just one earned run allowed in 12.1 innings pitched. He earned the win in the Cal Poly series opener, striking out a season-high five batters in a 4.1-inning outing.
- NCBWA Preseason All-American Micah Ashman has two saves early this season, coming off an outstanding sophomore year for the southpaw. Ashman, who grew up in nearby Sandy, Utah, had nine saves a year ago and enters the new season on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List. He is ranked by D1Baseball.com as the preseason No. 23 prospect in the Pac-12 for the 2024 MLB Draft.
- Offensively, outfielder Kai Roberts (10) and infielder Core Jackson (9) are looking to continue team-leading hitting streaks. Roberts had three doubles and six RBI in the Cal Poly series, ranking second in the Pac-12 with six doubles so far this season. Roberts is hitting .326 after playing in all 11 games, while Jackson has a .311 clip with three doubles, one homer and eight RBI.
- Through 11 games, Utah has stolen a league-leading 23 bases, more than double the team's total at the same point last season (10). Core Jackson and Kai Roberts have swiped five bags apiece.
- Infielder Bruer Webster has yet to strike out in 27 at bats, making him the only player in the Pac-12 and meeting NCAA minimums (2.5 at bats/game, played in 75% of games) not to have struck out.
- Following Tuesday's game, Gary Henderson's club will head to Pullman, Washington, for a three-game series at Washington State. Utah swept the Cougars last season in Salt Lake City and won two of three during the 2022 season at Bailey-Brayton Field.
