The First Pitch: Things to Know
It's back to home sweet home for the Utah Baseball team as the Utes look to keep the momentum going after a road series win at Arizona State. The Utes have received votes in the national polls for four straight weeks, and now embark on a stretch of eight straight games along the Wasatch Front. Seven of those eight will be played in Smith's Ballpark, beginning Tuesday with an 11 a.m. matinee against Utah Valley.
- The Utes are looking for a sweep of the season series against UVU, after taking both games of a home-and-home on April 1-2. Utah took the opener at Smith's Ballpark by a 10-1 score and erased a 4-0 first-inning deficit the following night in Orem to ultimately take a 13-8 triumph. To date, Utah has trailed at some point in 15 of its 23 wins.
- Utah is receiving votes in both the NCBWA and USA Today (coaches) polls. Head coach Gary Henderson's club sits fourth in the Pac-12 Conference standings; the Utes have won four of their five series in the league including all three on the road (Washington State, Cal, Arizona State). Most recently, the rubber game win at ASU gave the Utes their 23rd win, surpassing the season total from the 2023 campaign.
- A haul of accolades rolled into Salt Lake City on Monday, headlined by southpaw Bryson Van Sickle claiming D1Baseball.com National Pitcher of the Week. The native of Eagle Mountain, Utah, was lights-out in his Friday start at Arizona State with a "Maddux"—that is, a complete game shutout on less than 100 pitches. Such a feat hadn't happened in the Pac-12 since 2018.
- Van Sickle needed just 82 pitches to three-hit the Sun Devils in the 10-0 Utah win. He walked nobody, struck out a season-high eight batters and never allowed the leadoff man to reach. ASU also never put a runner in scoring position all night.
- Utah also swept the Pac-12 Conference weekly awards on Monday; Van Sickle was named Pitcher of the Week and outfielder TJ Clarkson claimed Player of the Week coming off an ASU series in which Clarkson hit .583 with four homers and eight RBI.
- Offensively, the Utes continue to be paced by center fielder and Lehi, Utah native Kai Roberts (.358 / .449 / .606), whose batting average ranks third in the Pac-12. It is almost 100 points North of where Roberts finished his junior season in 2023; he also leads the league with 22 stolen bases entering the week. Roberts also is third in the league with 13 doubles.
- Roberts follows leadoff man and shortstop Core Jackson in the lineup; the latter is hitting .338 in his first season as a Ute. Jackson (15) trails only Roberts for the most stolen bases in the Pac-12 while he and Roberts are tied for fifth in the conference with three triples apiece.
- Approaching the final month of the regular season, Utah remains one of the Pac-12's higher-scoring offenses at 6.9 runs per game. It ranks fifth in the conference and continues a steady climb over the last three seasons. In part thanks to assistant coach Todd Guilliams' guidance, the Utes averaged 6.2 runs per game in 2022 and rose to 6.7 runs per game in '23.
- The pitching staff also has shown continued progress from a year ago. Now with a 4.86 ERA on the season, the Utes rank fifth in the Pac-12, down from a 7.12 tally at the end of the 2023 season.
- Gary Henderson's club reached the 20-win mark in their first 28 games, the fastest in recorded program history. Previously, the Utah club known to reach 20 wins the fastest was in 1997; that year the team started 20-12-1.
- The Utes will stay right here in Salt Lake City for the weekend and prepare to welcome Washington for a three-game series. Friday's series opener will be an 11 a.m. MT first pitch, with both Saturday and Sunday's contests coming at 7 p.m. MT.
